We are going to try to get through this last week until pay day on the odds and ends we have in so the meals will not be Michelin star by any means but we'll manage. Sunday-Chickpea and new potato curry Monday-Meat balls with sweet…

Blackcurrant Jam Help
Good afternoon all, I was wandering if someone could help me understand why the blackcurrant jam which I made this morning has ended up so runny. I have made it before and have never had a problem. I know that blackcurrants have a high level of pectin and today I also used preserving sugar so I'm not sure why it's…

Spelt loaf
I'm sorry but I can't find the recipe files and maybe there's a recipe on there which would do, but if not, has anyone got a recipe for spelt bread, either wholemeal/brown or white but spelt only - no ordinary wheat ? I went to a craft fair recently and there was a London baker there selling brilliant brown-looking 100%…

Family trees
I am starting this new thread, as having asked about other peoples experiences. The discussion nearly took over the thread. That was not fair to the others. So, having traced my own family back to the 1700s. Oh I made loads of mistakes, I would like to hear from others. I have a good friend who is a genealogist, so I am a…

book title
I was talking to my daughter about reading a book about an elderly lady who lived in a cottage in the Welsh hills or mountains, on her own, with no power or running water and was self sufficient (I think). Do any of you old stylers know the book I'm thinking of and can you tell me the title please?

Made me laugh!
Got a phone call from my friend this morning, asking if I could look in on her dogs a couple of times today. She's off to work, medieval-style; she does medieval cookery at one of our local National Trust properties, all swathed in linen & wool and over an open fire, with a spit. Today she's boiling up bones with…

Homemade soap dish?
I have a fair few bars of soap sitting in a drawer. They haven't been used as we lost our soapdish somewhere during our house move. I've been setting the soap on the side of the sink but it goes gooey too quickly and would like to find an alternative. Does anyone have any ideas for a homemade soap dish that will keep the…

Elmlea in Victoria Sponge Cake
I was in Iceland earlier and intended to buy double cream to make a Victoria Sponge Cake, to take into work tomorrow. They only had Elmlea double cream alternative. It said it was suitable for whipping so didn't think anything of it. Got it home and made it cake. Cream alternative whipped up really easily with some icing…

How much cheaper is it to bake your own bread??
I normally buy a loaf of bread from Adli for 49p. Its a thick, white, toast bread. Its very nice however, sometimes it a bit hard and for this reason I sometime find myself buy a loaf for 75p. I am thinking about baking my own, I have no bread baking experiance so will be looking to buy a bread maker (and an electric knife…
