Tarnished chrome taps
Our bathroom taps (bath and sink) are badly discoloured, kind of mottled and tarnished. You can tell at some point they were chrome but I have no idea what the previous owners did to them to make them look so awful. Is there anything I can use on them to make them look better? I don't even like the taps and they were…

Soda Stream - is it worth buying?
I like fizzy drinks a lot but storing large bottles takes up a lot of room so I was considering buying one of these instead. I've read some reviews but a lot of people seem to review it shortly after they've bought it. I'd prefer to know a bit more about it after using it long term. Does anyone have one? They're quite…

Split Yellow Peas.
I want to make a Daal (Dal..dahl??) with Yellow split peas. On the pack it says to simmer for 35-40 mins before using. As i will be simmering the Daal anyway, does this mean i can skip the initial 35-40mins and just make the Daal as normal?

Just a warning for rapeseed intolerant people
the below is copied from my thread I posted in Praise Vent and Warnings. I know many posters on here have IBS or various intolerances so this may be useful here too. I picked up a punnet of cress on a visit to Tesco last week. I love cress and today wondered why 'some' of the leaves looked a little different to others.…

Need help to get back in the swing of being thrifty
Having just logged in I realised other than visiting the site on and off for credit cards or utility info etc I have not actually been on the forums for 3 years and 11 days!!! I have now come to realise I no longer meal plan, or make my own bread or use the bread maker I insisted I needed last year, I hardly ever bake…

Refilling a bean bag bed?
25 Kg of Gitdog have well and truly flattened the beads in his bed. I've found the refill beans but the liner to put them in seems really flimsy for a heavy footed dog. I need to put the beans in something so I can take them out to wash the bed without them flying around and covering the walls and ceiling. The only other…

Attitudes to cooking, cleaning, laundry etc
Do you think people make too big a deal about getting these household chores done these days. There are endless blogs, vlogs and books about how to tidy, how to fit it all in, how to plan meals and so on. I spend a lot of time reading about all of this stuff, writing lists, planning and organising to my mum's amusement. My…

White trainers filthy, how to clean them?
DS2 has a pair of expensive white trainers with mesh uppers. He went to a party last night and they are literally black. I do have a trainer wash program on the washing machine but I tried this on another pair of trainers and wasn't all that impressed. If I do try this again what temperature can I wash them at without them…

Biscuit Recipe...
I've just got some dog bone (like Bonio) shaped cookie cutters and have been experimenting with dough. When cooking, the shape has not held and the biscuits have either 'spread' into blobs, were too crumbly or just looked wrong. I need a recipe (human not canine ;) ) that will produce dark, crispy (but thick) biscuits that…

Want to grow my own herbs - any tips?
Hi there, Apologies if this isn't the right place to post about it. I've always wanted to grow my own herbs and vegetables, but have never lived anywhere with a garden. (Sad, I know!) I'd like to try growing herbs on my windowsill - well, technically I don't have a windowsill, it's more of a big floor-to-ceiling window…
