Are Plastic Pudding Basins Any Good?
I want to start making steamed puddings again but I need to buy some pudding basins. I have a recipe for a steak and kidney pudding which requires a 3 pint basin but most of them seem to be plastic with lids. Can anyone tell me does the plastic lid replace the foil and does this work? I think I would prefer a porcelain one…

How early before making a baked alaska could I whisk the eggs? How long would they keep their peaks before it would be too late to cook them? I'm trying to work out timings/prep for a pre christmas christmas dinner :o

Panini Press
Not sure if this is the right place for this, but as most conversations revolve about food thought it was worth a go! We eat a lot of panini's at home so would like to get a panini press to save heating up the oven and get a better taste. I have found 2 models circa £30 but with one difference - one has flat plates, the…

Went to flip mattress over & it's covered in mold!
I'm really upset. My parents bought my a expensive double mattress before i left home 6 years ago, we flip it regularly (even though it's a no need to flip one). We moved in to this house 6 months ago, so we went to flip the mattress today, to find it completely riddled (and that's an understatement) in big green mold. I…

Microwave Cooking Tips & Recipe Ideas .
Hi All , Apologies if there's already a thread . In a move to save on my electricity bill I've decided to use my microwave to cook from scratch rather than use the hob/oven as apparently it's more cost effective . http://www.uswitch.com/energy-saving/guides/energy-efficient-cooking/ Now I have to admit that I use mine…

Using soap to brush teeth
I read about this on a soapmaking forum I use - using ordinary soap to brush your teeth! Some people are concerned with the use of flouride, even with regards to teeth. Apparently when flouride is not used the teeth can re-mineralise and even heal small cavities themselves. I do intend to ask my dentist about this next…

Making chili oil advice please
We have picked the last of our chillis and we would like to make chili oil. I've looked online and various recipes suggest just heating the chilis and oil for a while, cool and sterile bottle. Other sites talk about the risk of botulism. While these are likely to be for the in laws, I don't want the hassle of funerals - so…

Clueless at budgeting for food, help please?
Hi, I'm clueless really about budgeting but needs must as our income has dropped by £200 per month meaning that we need to cut back in food shopping as I have cut all our other bills where possible so this is the only thing left to go down. My question is dies anyone manage to do this or is it doable? £200 for 2 adults, 1…

Preserves and plastic bottles
I loathe to throw away plastic water bottles and condiment bottles, can these be sterilised easily and used again for flavoured oils and quick sauces, etc? I always imagine the narrow necks with nozzles and squeezable nature would sometimes be easier than glass jars and bottles when it comes to thin, runny home makes.…

Jamie Oliver homecooker
Just got one of these from John Lewis (£100 instead of £250 :j , now discontinued), to replace my old Intellichef (make 1, nothing to do with the current gadget with the same name), which I use daily. Has anyone else got one? What do you cook with it? Any tips or recipes (I'll be sharing mine as soon as I start using it)?

Going through a massive money-saving overhaul
Hi MSE peeps, I just wanted to document the fact that today marks my big challenge to save money in any and every way possible. The goal is to save up for a house deposit because my gf of 6 years has worked very hard to save up for one herself and I feel somewhat behind. Everything from ditching the car for walking on…

Chutney hasn't set - pectin problem...help please!
Hello - I was given loads of quinces last week and yesterday made them into chutney with other fruit. But my chutney hasn't set - it's still liquid, like fruit in thick syrup. The recipe said to boil the quince peelings and cores before adding the strained liquid to the main ingredients. I reckon that this is the source of…
