After having been snowed in for 10 days in north northumberland, I thought I would share what this weather had taught me. I had read and contributed to the preparing for winter thread 1 and 2. I had stocked up but I dont think much could have fully prepared me for being snowed in for that long I now know my shortcomings…

Defrosted gammon - is it still safe to use?
I took a gammon joint out of the freezer on Wednesday night to slow cook for dinner the following day. Ended up not using it & haven;t had a chance to since. Will it still be OK tomorrow to use do you think? It is vacuum sealed and is in the fridge. Thanks.

Apple crumble - freeze it cooked or frozen?
Hi all Have made two crumbles tonight. Cooked (and eaten although not on my own :D ) one and want to freeze the other but should I freeze it as is (cooked apples raw crumble) or cook it and freeze it for the best result ?

How to remove spice aromas from glass jars?

bacon substitute
I use alot of smoked bacon rashers in pasta dishes and chicken dishes for the flavour it gives. Not necessarily alot, maybe 1 or 2 rashers. I froze some homemade soup, defrosted it and took some to work with me. I'm not sat at my desk on my break with a rather watery version of what I'd made. Good butter for baking?
Hullo! I have recently become addicted to baking and i've been using our lurpak spreadable, but obviously this is pretty expensive. Are all butters the same? If i bought the cheapest butter out there would my baking still be as nice? Ta! :D
