How to remove spice aromas from glass jars?

Options
Please could I have some ideas on how to remove the aroma of spices from glass jars? I want to reuse them as sweet jars for a few friend's children (wrapped sweets, mini choc bars etc).

They're Douwe Egberts coffee jars and it was probably cumin or coriander in them (don't ask - MIL seemed to think we *needed* them in such vast quantities and we honestly didn't!).

I have bicarb of soda. I'm thinking I need to do something with that, but not sure what - do I put it in dry and seal or leave open, or mix with water.. :o Also have bleach if that'd be better. Sorry, clueless!

Many thanks :)

  • Hi elle_gee,

I tend to put some water mixed with vinegar into my jars for a few hours, then rinse out with cold water. It always works for me.

As for the bicarb, I've never used it, but I imagine it would work either dry or mixed with water?

Wash your jars well first, and make sure they are properly dry before using bicarb - use it dry. Put a good few spoonfulls in the jar, seal, shake well whenever you pass them, and leave for a day or two. Remove bicarb, rinse and leave it to dry, then smell it. Repeat if necessary with fresh bicarb.

If that doesn't work, try the vinegar tip above.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
