Had a quote of £240 inc VAT to lay just under 3m sq of floor tiles, which involves lifting the loo basin, putting some underlaying sheet to prevent cracking from moving floor boards, and a new strip between the floor and the adjoining floor carpet. The work is in a samll bathroom.

Price for painting windows and doors.
My mum needs some window and door exteriors painting, when the weather improves slightly. Normally I would do it for her, but since she has moved 150 miles away, that isn't very practical. Gas Related Work - Thoughts on prices?
Hi all, I'm in the process of negotiating on a house purchase. It's early days and I'd like to get some local tradesmen to quote on work, but thought I'd ask here first. There is gas in the street but not in this house, there is no central heating, just two open fires. The bathroom is derelict. The list below is work I…

How much roughly should I be looking at to get an internal door fitted if I supply the door and also the handles? Ive had one quote back which was £85. I have since emailed back asking how much the quote would be if I was to have 4 internal doors fitted. Not sure if it would work out better in the long run to get all the…

Structural engineer to expose, inspect and advise on existing RSJ
Had RSJ put in to opening between dining room and lounge by a firm of not very good builders. They told me they used Engineer's Calcs but despite numerous requests have not supplied anything (tried to trick me by giving docs from another job instead) so I suspect they were lying. They also did not involve Building Control.…

Boiler installation - engineer asking for deposit via bank transfer
Hi all, I have accepted a quote on a boiler installation. The engineer has asked for a 40% deposit via a bank transfer. This gives us no protection whatsoever and we have to trust that we'll receive a receipt/contract after payment has been made. He can't accept credit cards, which would at least give us some comeback if…

How much to remove part of chimney breast?
Hi. We have a chimney breast in a downstairs room which doesn't continue all the way up through the room above so it has no support function. We want to retain it but knock the central part out and put two large cupboards there. When I mentioned this to the builder he raised his eyebrows and said knocking out and removing…

Hi there, I'm feeling a bit sick at the moment as I think I may have signed something I shouldn't have. I'll try to keep this short.... Fixing broken door frame
The door handle on my daughter's bedroom door broke while she was in there and we ended up having to kick the door in. The door survived but the door frame broke, with one of the long sides coming away from the wall. The property is rented and the landlord has apparently been quoted £300 to have it fixed, to come out of…
