Quote for replacement ridge tiles

Hi there,
I'm feeling a bit sick at the moment as I think I may have signed something I shouldn't have. I'll try to keep this short....
At around 3am this morning I heard a loud rumbling noise but being the time that it was I just drifted off thinking I had imagined it. Well, this morning when I left for work I noticed a pile of rubble and bits of broken tile on the ground and looked up only to find that almost an entire ridge of tiles had slipped off my roof!
I went straight back indoors and online to find a roofing company that could provide me with a quote for repair. On a side note I also emailed the estate agents that rent out the house next door and asked them to inform the landlord as the ridge is the dividing line between our terraced homes. Does anyone know if the neighbour is obligated to share the repair costs?
Anyway, while browsing I come across a website for a company called Aspect. Their rate for roofing jobs is £62.50 + VAT for each HALF-HOUR. On top of that there would obviously be additional costs of materials. Now I know this (at least to me) seems expensive but I wouldn't have thought that it would take more than a few hours so I was expecting and I suppose prepared to pay a few hundred pounds.
However, when the roofer arrived to give his quote he said I would have to pay rent for tower scaffolding as its a 3-storey property and after several conversations with his colleague on the phone he came up with a figure of £550 for the rent and erection of the scaffolding. Then I would have to pay £450 for the actual tiles to be replaced. This totals £1000. He mumbled something about it actually costing more than this with the VAT added on but that they were willing to do me a deal and if I paid the £1000 by cash or cheque then I would not have to pay the VAT. Does this make any sense? £500 is to be paid on the start date and £500 on work completion which he says is when his colleague comes to inspect the work several days after completion.
And yes, I do feel a bit sick because yes I did go ahead, somewhat reluctantly, and sign to have this done, mainly because I am concerned about having rain leaking into my loft space and having even more damage to contend with. But it just didn't feel right.
Is £1000 a reasonable amount to pay to have those tiles replaced? Surely a company such as Aspect would have their own scaffolding equipment so should it reasonably cost £550 for it?
Many thanks for your time,
Steven

Without a pic of the damage it's hard to say. The fallen ridges could have taken out a few tiles on the way.
By law you have seven days to cancel. Either way you haven't paid a deposit so don't worry. Just tell them you don't have the money.
Is it a felted roof? Usually the felt is folded over the ridge, it will be more water tight than you think.
Where bouts are you? Peeps on here can recco a roofer they have used. As thingy above says always get three quotes.0 -
As said above if the roof is felted and the felt is in good condition, you shouldn't get any water come in. I had an extension done on my house last year and once the roof was felted in was watertight. Cancel your order and get some more quotes. Also contact your insurance company.0
