Temporary & permanent shed roof fix
The felt on my wooden shed is knackered as it's leaking in various spots. In case it matters to the answer any, it's not a packaged shed in that you go online, see a wooden shed & say I'll buy that one. It's a DIY build from a previous owner of the house. They've used treated timber throughout & I'd say it's made from…

Side extension against boundary
Hi all, Speculative at this stage but we're looking into options to extend our home in the future which (based on the fairly limited space we have) involves extending the building into the side passage and right up to the boundary. So the external wall to the house would effectively replace what is currently a brick…

Loft conversion – any advice from people who’ve done one? What would you do differently?
I live in Havering (London) and looking to get a loft extension done for a 2 bedroom mid-terraced house. It will be the biggest project I've ever done so just looking for as much advice and feedback as possible. Would also be great if anyone can recommend anyone in the area. Below is the first floor plan and the red line…

Gravel driveway / front of house

Combi Boiler swap
I had my gas boiler from new, as it came with my new build in 2010. I am planning to head off a total fail, and after 15/16 years of use it is now quite noisy and has needed repairs over each of the last three years. I am however due a service that I have paid for within a few weeks. So I feel like it will be a good time…

Unknown leak 1 month after moving in.
I am stressing so hard right now, I moved into this flat 1 month ago and I checked around all the radiator pipes for leaks and didn't see anything. Earlier today about 9am I ripped up the carpet in the bedroom and it was bone dry, no evidence of a leak of any kind. Then about 10am the pressure in my boiler dropped to 0, so…

Cavity wall insulation causing cracks on render - Insurer/Installer AWOL
Hi! Nearly 10 years ago I benefitted from a government scheme to have cavity wall insulation on my semi-detached property. In the last 2 years, the outside render has been cracking along the bricks (and some internal damp which I don't necessarily attribute to the work carried out) so I decided to raise a claim as the work…

Funding for new windows..(ads)
Hi all, I've been a flood of facebook reels targeting me via 'the algorithm' advertising funding for new windows. There are a plethora of different companies out there (latest one for example smarterhomeupgrades.com) and they typically follow the same format of a promise of 1000s funding initiated by a postcode check.…

Trousers with soft knee pads that don't have a 10+ pockets?
I'm trying to find a simple pair of durable trousers that have either built in soft squishy foam padding arounds the knee cap and just below the knee cap, but every pair I look at are like full scale tradesman cargo work trousers that have like 10 pockets. I just want a basic pair of trousers with the normal 2 pockets but…

Limescale in pipes
We recently had problems with water draining from the bath. I put in 'Mr Muscle' and similar drain unblocking products, to no avail. In the end I called in a plumber and he found the waste water pipe was blocked with solid limescale, almost like concrete. This has accumulated over 23 years since these pipes were put in.…

Rats and insulation
I had rats in my loft and they made a huge mess of the insulation. This has now been removed but I'm not sure what is the best course of action. They seem to be running along the soffits possibly coming in at the corners both on the end of my home or from next door. But they could get in under the tiles. Has anyone had…

What is this?
It's located in a little cupboard close to the kitchen, it's been switched off from the day I moved in and it doesn't appear to do anything. I'm guessing it's where a boiler or water tank used to be or something? Can I safely remove it from the wall and either put a blank cover over the socket?
