    Satinwood is the most gloss-like

    You might also consider Eggshell

Oil based paints will yellow quicker. Since the regulations governing VOCs changed quite a few years ago they’re formulated differently and don’t resist yellowing well. If they’re in bright sunlight they won’t yellow as fast.

Water based glosses and satinwoods are much, much better at resisting yellowing and easier to apply but, as they dry more quickly, you need to work more quickly with them.

Water based paints don’t adhere well to previous oil based coats so use a high adhesion primer/undercoat first.

I use Zinsser Bullseye 123 as a basecoat then two coats of Johnstone’s Aqua Gard Satin. Use a good synthetic brush or roll with a 4” fine roller then lay off with the brush. Hamilton Perfection or Wooster brushes are good. Either way synthetic is better for water based.

Aqua Gard gloss is available but I can’t really say what it’s like because I haven’t used gloss for quite a while.

    Hope that helps.

Yellowing white paint is one of the reasons we decided to get rid of painted skirtings and architraves and replace them with oak. The only remaining non-oak skirtings are painted with paint that matches the wall colours.

I would have thought gloss was the most gloss like ? Satinwood is less glossy but seems more popular.

OP - as said in the previous post you want to be using water based gloss/satinwood. Normally it is available as 'normal' and ' quick dry' . The latter can dry within an hour, but can be an issue if you go over it with the brush a few minutes after the initial application, as it can leave visible brush strokes, as it has already started drying.

I found this quick dry water based white satinwood to be not too bad in that respect and not too expensive.

As already said if you paint this type directly on top of old oil base paint ( the yellow stuff), it will not adhere very well, so needs some pretreatment.

Well, yes, gloss is the most gloss-like but since the rules changed requiring gloss to be re-formulated, gloss paint goes off-colour fairly quickly developing a yellowish or pinkish (depends on brand) hue and most certainly does not stay brilliant white.

Hence, the alternative to gloss, that looks as close as gloss without being gloss is satinwood which stays pure brilliant white rather than going off-colour like gloss.

Just hoping I have not glossed over anything in that.

It wasn’t just oil based gloss that was reformulated. Oil based satinwood was as well. That also yellows quickly. It’s the water based versions that don’t yellow.

AIUI, you can buy the traditional oil based gloss, which is said to paint on more smoothly and gives a really glossy finish, but will yellow within a couple of years or so.

Or you can buy water based gloss, which might not give quite the same glossy finish ( but quite close) and will not yellow.

I have some woodwork which was painted about ten years ago in Dulux Diamond oil based eggshell finish. It has not yellowed.
