Council want to move aunt to a cheaper care home after 4 years!
My aunt moved in to a care home following the death of my uncle. She couldn't cope living on her own and went downhill fast. She chose to go in to a very nice home that had cared for other family members previously, including my uncle when he passed away. Aunt had plenty off money so the fees weren't an issue and she was…

The problem was small electronic devices
At 60+, I have moved from full-time employment to part-time self-employment. In recent years, I have been having difficulty with many tiny electronic devices because of hand dexterity, hand pain and eyesight limitations. I never thought that my employer really understood my difficulties. Now that I'm an independent man so…

60 + property - why?
Hi folks, I'm 62 next birthday and sometimes I feel like it, sometimes I don't! Today I went for an 8 mile walk with a younger chum and thoroughly enjoyed it. On the way back we swung by the old chocolate factory in Keynsham, which is in the middle of being converted into a huge block of flats. (Yes, the same choccy…

Raise cash from house
I don't really like equity release for a number of reasons. It is difficult (if not impossible?) for golden oldies to get a standard mortgage. Has anyone ever considered / investigated whether it would be possible to arrange a BTL mortgage as an alternative?

Nursing home fees following death of joint property owner.
A relative is joint owner of a house he and his wife own. His wife is moving into a nursing home to live, he is over 60 and will continue to live in the house. My question is, if he was to die would the LA expect at 100% of the monies go to his wife? In his will he is leaving his 50% to another relative, will this mean the…

Personal rate of inflation
With my pensions rising by 4% this year, I wondered what the real rate of inflation was for me. I found an interesting personal inflation calculator here: https://www.rathbones.com/personal-inflation-calculator Interestingly, it gave my personal rate of inflation as 0.3%. I am sixty-two now and working three days a week. I…

If you took one out then check it for dates, my elderly friend just found out that he was scammed, someone intercepted the form and he lost the whole amount. He didn`t know until a few days ago and is devastated. Mine appeared in my bank account a few days ago

I have a 2 year fixed rate bond with Santander. If I were to die 6 months in to it and the executor then closed it down would interest be paid for the time I was alive and held the bond? Thank you.

Just wondering...what paid work do you do?
Dear all, after I downshifted from the lifetime career over 10 years ago now, I took on a range of part time jobs, one of which lasted 9 years, often several at a time. At one point I had 5 part time jobs, none of which added up to full time equivalent but I loved the variety and how my brain was kept in top gear! Now I'm…

What is the avearge cost of a care package?
My mother lives alone and has been assessed by the council as needing care three times each day (to ensure meds taken, food eaten and the heating is working). There are no personal services for washing, foot care, or housework. She isn't taken shopping or to a day-care centre either. Don't get me wrong, I am very relieved…

Due a partial refund Power of Attorney fees?
Hi everybody, I’ve been a long term browser of this site, finally plucked up courage to join and get involved. Please be gentle with me - first time poster! Just a heads up really, I can’t take any direct credit as the information I originally got from Martin’s amazingly useful site. The Government has decided to partially…

2018 It's My Time
Well l've decided to start this diary for me so that maybe in 12 months time l can look back at what l have or have not achieved. Let's hope it's the first and that when l look back on this post it's from the front seat of my camper some where warm. Small potted history - lost my DH at 50 but luckily he left me not having…

Power of Attorney
I am getting confusing and contradictory information about this. My mother has dementia and can't cope with her finances. I need to be able to step in and pay her bills, her chiropody fees, her online supermarket shopping and numerous other things. POA would be helpful at the bank. However, some people say that it's too…

50 ... assume long life and be frugal or open up?
Hi All As the title suggests I'm 50 in March..... time to think about things... I've got no mortgage, have a nice house, great wife and kids (kids are older and still live at home but that's another story!) Got my own IT business which I suspect I'll find increasing difficult to keep up with so may need to scale back soon…

Maximum savings before they can be used for care?
Unsure if this is the correct place to ask, please point me in the right direction or move the post if wrong. I am POA for my parents, and youngest of their four children. They are fortunate enough to own their own home and have worked hard to have some savings. My father has some health and dementia issues, and we are…
