Old £20 notes
As I’m an Over 50er I am hoping I am posting in the right place. I have several thousand pounds in old £20 notes but I understand banks and post offices won’t exchange them. I believe I can pay them into a bank account but I don’t want to. I like to have some cash to hand and always have done. i know they will be legal…

What would you do?
Age 70 last November my wife has flexible drawdown with Halifax Life. She put the full value of her fund into their money fund to avoid any stock market losses (good job considering recent fluctuations). Halifax have told her they will not handle her account after age 75. Since her retirement she has taken just enough…

Grant Overpayment
Hi I am all new to this so I apologize if I am not at the right place. I took a 3-year course from 2015-2018 and was allowed grants and loans for the course. The first year I got all my entitlement from Student Loan Company but the following year they didn't pay me my grant arguing I was unduly paid the previous year. I…

Bed blocking
Both parents are very ill and very elderly. One of them is in hospital and has been for a couple of weeks and is basically "bed-blocking". Hospital parent has been having carers coming in at home 3 times a day (reasonable care firm for reasonable length visits) for months now to deal with them and the hospital says a…

Pros and Cons of Pre-Paid Funeral Plans
I cannot see an earlier thread on this topic, but if I have missed one then apologies in advance. My parents, in their late 80s, are looking into these plans and I have no experience of the advantages and/or disadvantages of using them, so thought I would consult the collective wisdom of MSE, hoping to be able to tap into…

Radio for someone with poor eyesight
I have a relative in a care home, and she currently uses a very old DAB radio (one of the very earliest ones produced, I think). The reception is poor and we would like to replace it. But she has very poor eyesight, and a recent stroke means she doesn't find small, close-together buttons easy to use - she only has the use…

Are private hearing aids better than NHS?
I've had NHS hearing aids now for a year. I've been back to audiology dept several times as they're just not right. In a social setting, i.e. meeting, party, etc., they're completely useless as all they do is amplify the background noise meaning I still can't hear people talking. In fact, over Christmas, I found I could…

Lights from Serious Readers
Has anyone used lights from Serious Readers? http://www.serious.readers.com They use something called Daylight Wave Technology which is supposed to benefit older eyes. It looks appealing, but the lights are not particularly cheap, and would like to hear if anyone has tried them and what they think.

Specsavers hearing tests (and hearing aids)
Relative has an appointment coming up with Specsavers for a hearing test. It's a 90 minute appointment, but I can't believe Specsavers are going to spend anywhere remotely near an hour and a half on a hearing test. I'm guessing it will be about half an hour (if that) for the hearing test, and the rest of the time trying to…

Ways to spend a lump sum on a special holiday
Hi I am looking for advice and wonder if anyone else has encountered and overcome a similar problem. I tired to post this on the credit card forum but kept getting a warning saying that I was posting on the "grabbit" forum, so am posting here instead. This is my first post so apologies if this is inappropriate. I have just…
