Overhead power line compensation.
Hi All, I had a letter a few days ago regarding compensation for power lines that cross over my house. This was from a company called PCC who claimed to have been acting for the previous owner and been very close to the end of the claim after the previous owner had an offer. I have since moved in around 3 months ago and…

DORMANT ACCOUNT?
Nat West Bank sent all my husband's savings from his company to the Treasury in 2018 without informing us. He had a stroke in 2015 and had to close the company. From what I have read, the Law in 2009 states that if the Treasury wanted to claim this money in under 15 years, it had to be agreed with the Minister. Does anyone…

Reclaiming Import Duty paid
In February I returned a product to Finland having paid £40 duty to HMRC via DHL. Your MSE article rightly advises to claim a refund using HMRC form C285. At first attempt it was impossible to complete due to the details required. I rang DHL tax and duty team and they immediately provided all the reference numbers I needed…

Hi I have looked at the banding of houses in my area and those that similar or have larger habitable areas are in a lower banding, the problem is that I live in a rural area and none of the house are the same. How do I go about getting evidence that mine should be re-assessed. Also mine is a rental and has never been sold.…

Rebanding deadline
After watching the last episode of MSE tonight and receiving our new council tax bill I thought I'd look into it again. We've lived here for 7 years and I heard that there was a deadline for contesting? However I've checked the gov website and the 3 bed terrace houses where I live are in Band C although ours in a semi and…

Challenging Council Tax when House Never Been Sold
I want to challenge my council tax band and think we should have a case for it. We are the smallest on the street and the house above which was built after this one and is both larger inside and outside has been challenged in the past and is the band below us. My problem is the house has never been sold so don't know how…

Home - Council Tax Banding
I have recently bought a house that is in Band 'D', suggesting that in April 1991 it was valued at between £68,000 and £88,000, and this is where my query lies. The previous owner bought the property in Nov 1981 for £32,000. All the evidence I can find would suggest a growth over the next 9 and a half years was (on…

Taking Paypal to the Small Claims Court, possible?
Is it possible to put in a claim against Paypal for money of mine that they are holding for 180 days through the small claims court? The reason I ask is because, although I have acted lawfully and have not behaved fraudulently in any of my dealings with Paypal or Ebay selling, I notice that Paypal as a company operates out…

Class I exemption question
My parents-in-law moved in with my husband so that we could look after them due to old age and ill health. They never went back to their old home and no-one ever stayed there - even for one night. Due to lack of space and my mother-in-law's need for her own bedroom to fit in care equipment, my husband and I moved next…

New Build Council Tax Banding
Hi I built a house in 2012 and was valued at £200000 and put in bad F for council tax which was correct at the time of build. Looking at how council tax banding was introduced it was based on a property’s value in 1991 which in theory would have been £84000 and band D for my property had it been built prior to 1991. My…

Vauxhall Diesels
Had a message from a company offering to deal with claims against Vauxhall for fitting illegal devices in cars made between 2009 to 2019. Much like the recent Volkswagen claim. Is this a scam? I have a Corsa Diesel 2.0L Sri. The only issue is I didn’t buy if from new. I bought it from Motorpoint with relatively low…

Hi I hope someone can help, I have just realised that a current mortgage insurance policy I have with legal and general is for my previous property which was paid off 11 years ago, and not for my current property where I have a separate policy with Aviva. I can’t believe that I didn’t realise I am paying both and have…

Hi all, A couple of years ago I invested money in a USI Tech bitcoin scheme that turned out to be a scam. I only lost £100 but £100 is a lot of money to me and I'd like to get it back if I can. There are ads for companies that will do this for me but I wondered if anyone can give me some advice about doing it myself?…

Tax confusion/locum agency PAYE
Hi there. I'm a locum pharmacy technician. I've recently thrown my hat back in the pharmacy ring (February) so I haven't really worked so far in this tax year, mainly due to hating pharmacy! This means I haven't touched my 12500tax free allowance. I resigned to a locum agency I had used a few years ago under their PAYE and…

First Direct Handling of Scam - shambles!
Scammed in December 2020 by someone claiming to be from HSBC, owners of First Direct. FD will only repay 50% of money taken as "I could have done more to prevent it". Fair comment but their handling of the whole episode leaves lot to be desired. Despite being division of HSBC, FD have own fraud department for account…
