I am having problems with by bin collection. I leave it out side my house and is collected by the bin men but they don't return it. They leave it up the road where the lorry stops.
I have been complaining to my local council for months, they are now saying I have to deal with the contractors who do the collections.
I pay the council in council tax so my contract is with them not their sub-contractors. Isn't it down to the council to sort this out?
Any thoughts and advice please.
Thanks.

  • It probably is down to the council to sort it out, but given they're not going to, get in touch with the contractors.

It really is up to the council. They hire the contractors, they should deal with the contractors. But you might have to just get on to the contractors yourself because councils don't seem to ever want to help anyone!

One day my bin (there are only 14 properties on our cul-de-sac) was the only one not emptied. I phoned the council who said I'd need to phone the contractors and gave me the number. Great. Anyway I did phone the contractors, who really couldn't have been more pleasant and sent a whole rig back out just to empty my bin that very afternoon. I did feel quite special, I have to say . . .  but if that's what you have to do then that's the way it is in this crazy upside down world!

Who owns the road outside your house?
Is it a private driveway or a council owned road?

In many cases if the bin lorry won't fit down a drive, or the road is private they will only collect from the end of the road anyway.

I'd be thankful they collect the full bin from outside the house rather than you having to take it to where the refuse vehicle stops.

I would doubt there is any right in law that your bin has to be returned to where you placed it for collection. But you could try to ascertain if is in the contract between the council and refuse company that all bins must be returned to the place from where they were collected.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Surely the crew would not wheel it more than 10-20 yards to the constantly moving/stopping vehicle.
I do hope your problem is a little further than wheeling an empty bin a few yards ?

Do you have limited mobility and qualify for assisted bin collection?

In my last house the bin could be left far enough away to just about give the dog a decent walk. I painted a large cat on it so I could recognise it from a distance.
