Heating system upgrade
Hi, Currently our oil heating system doesn’t heat hot water and central heating separately and we’ve had a quote for electrics and plumbing of 2100 to allow this, along with Nest installed. We’re based in Northern Ireland. Does this seem reasonable? Thanks

Main builder contracting other jobs for plumbing and electrics
When working with a builder on major renovations project that contracts other for specialised work like plumbing or electrics, does the builder takes a cut on top of what the contractor will bill them? And if so how much is usual?

Bathroom window
I was quoted £750 for a new bathroom window installation of a first floor bathroom. Frosted glass, with two openings, one tilt and one side opening. Size of window is 85 x 85 cm. Curious to see if this is a normal price as its been years since I paid for new ones. Thanks

Fuel payment not taken and now in debt
We have recently received a letter from bailiffs stating that we didn’t pay for fuel 2 months ago and as we haven’t updated V5 (did month after so our fault) we have additional charges. Tried to appeal as it was fuel stations error, we have the transaction for the extra bits but they didn’t put the fuel through when we…

Roof Valley Crack - Aquashield vs Patch
We have a crack in the valley between two roofs (20 year old extension). The crack is not long ways but across. I have been quoted £400 including VAT by a roofing company to patch it (replacing the whole valley I have no idea of the cost but I expect it is substantial) and £240 by another roofer (one man band) to…

One builder quoting a lot less than the others
I've had 4 quotes for a loft conversion - all are around £70,000 before VAT. One builder, not VAT registered has quoted £50,000 which is obviously a lot more appealing but I obviously have a niggling feeling that this is too low, considering the other quotes. The loft would be a conversion into one bedroom with a small…

LVT flooring
We are based in Nottingham. We hired a builder for an extension, and while the price was fair, he said it would take 3 months. We're now in month 7. My wife is due any day now. We waited a year for him to start, and before he began, I told him my wife was 2 months pregnant and asked if it would be an issue. He said no.…

Quoted over £850 for work on 3 years old boiler (expansion vessel failed?)
I had my yearly boiler check and the engineer signed it off without further comments on the service record ("standard boiler service"). He told me he was recommending to replace the expansion vessel, and while I was at it also to look at a valve where some green liquid leaks (maybe a drop or two over a year, he initially…

£70,000 for a loft conversion?
Hello, we are looking to get our loft converted into one large room (with 3 velux windows) and possible an ensuite which would need to be a dormer (the main room would not be a dormer). We would also need to turn our stairs around to fit the top stairs in. We've had 2 quotes: - one for £68,500 inc VAT which doesn't include…

House Alarm
Hello, A few neighbours have been burgled recently. We have looked into a house alarm and the only people who have provided us with a quote for an alarm is ADT (local firms have been asked but fail to get back to us). We were with ADT many years ago, they were ok, not fabulous but not terrible either. The quote is £380 for…

re-flaunching + roof tiles
Hi all, I've had a quote for re-flaunching the chimney and replacing 2 slate tiles on the roof - £530. This seems excessive to me but I don't have much experience so not sure. I had the chimney flaunching done about 3 years ago but it's got cracks in it now. It cost me about £200 at the time, but I guess they didn't do a…

Loft insulation quote
I am looking to get loft insulation. This requires removing existing stud walls, carpets, laying the insulation, and installing loft legs and boarding for storage. (I would also look to install a ventilation tile, but these aren't included in the quotes). -One has quoted about £1440 -Another has quoted £1110 (they will not…

Window Spraying…
Thoughts on this and bear with me… We have brown windows and a brown door on our house but both I and the painters want to paint our gate grey as we think it looks more modern. The Mrs (in her great wisdom) thinks it will clash with the window colours (pics below). We kind of came to an expensive compromise in that maybe…

Drain inspection (exploratory digging)
Hi all, We have an issue with our drains, which run to a soakaway. We had a camera inspection but it would only go so far due to a blockage which jetting wouldn't clear (possibly roots). The contractor needs to come back and dig up a small square of tarmac drive to expose the drain, jet it and insert a camera so they can…

Conversion of attached outside toilet and coal shed to utility room creating doorway into house
Hello, I would be most grateful for feedback on an estimate I have received for this job. The house is a 2 bed terrace in a Leicestershire village. I understand that good builders are hard to find and this one has been recommended. It has been several years since I have had anything like this done so am unsure about…

Cost of pest control
I've been quoted £264 for pest control to come out and deal with a possible mice problem in the loft. Is that a fair price for the NW of England?I'd get the council to come for free but due to Covid, they aren't coming into peoples homes. Would appreciate any help. Thank youUpdate: I've got another quote for £370+ from a…

Herringbone floor installation
Hi, I've been quoted £400 for herringbone flooring fitting. The room is only 5.5 m2. The quote doesn't include any flooring, we've already bought this. This seems excessive to me but not sure if I'm just completely clueless? We've just paid £180 to have regular laminate laid in a room double almost triple the size for…

Dry Ridge System
Got two alternative quotes for some roof work on a 1900 three storey end terrace. 1) Repoint all ridge tiles and do slate repairs as required £950 +VAT 2) Remove and replace ridge tiles with a dry ridge system, slate repairs as required. All waste removed and gutters cleared £1200 +VAT Is it worth paying the extra to…
