How much can you realistically trim off a door?
I'm looking to replace my living room door, which currently measures 193.5cm x 75.5cm. I’ve found a pre-finished glazed door I really like (linked below), but the height is 1981mm, which means I’d need to trim about 5cm off the bottom to make it fit. New door with nightlatch, can the rim lock be replaced with one that will turn twice?
Hi All, I feel this might be in the category of stupid questions, but thought I'd ask. We've recently had a new front door fitted which has a Yale nightlatch. Unlike our previous door, this new lock doesn't seem to allow for "double locking" of the top lock (i.e. turning the key twice) whereas the lock we had previously…

Replacing Garage Door?
Previous owner of my house fitted a roller door to the single garage complete with remote control units. It's all become unreliable and I'd like to replace the system, * Been quoted £1500-£2500 for a luxurious replacement with insulation, etc by a local firm. * But I don't need remote control, garage is used for storage *…

Push button bathroom door handle?
The bathroom doesn't have a lock so I have been looking for a minimalist version that do not require extra holes in the door frame or the need for a separate sashlock and minimise DIY work. What are your thoughts and experiences about "push" button door locks - something like this or this. For some reason I cannot find a…

Laminate Floor Meeting Carpet Question
Hi. I am wanting to install laminate flooring on our Landing but not sure how to transition the laminate floor edge where it meets the stair carpet runner on the top step. A friend mention a laminate flooring nose but not sure if this is the correct way to do it. Any advice would be fantastic Thanks for your time

Broken Pivot on shower door
The bottom pivot on my shower door broke, I wonder if is possible to replace the pivot, perhaps new pivots? It's an old door easily 25 years old. I'm worried that I might not find a compatible pivot if one can actually buy them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Class 2 metal/chrome light switches and wall sockets
Hello I've noted for years a slight tingle in one of our light switches, a one way switch. Today I tested it and it was showing a very slight reading. The centre switch ie the turn on/off light switch has a plastic surround and no tinling or reading. One of our 2 gang metal sockets showing an even lower reading at times…

Cistern part needs replacing
The plastic thread on this part is visibly worn and slightly leaking. So two questions, is it simple to replace? And what the hell is it called so I can look for a replacement? (it's on the inlet pipe) (i already tried renewing the PTFE tape, just on the off chance, but made no difference)

Adjust door closer speed?
Hello I bought a https://www.amazon.co.uk/Self-Adhesive-Drilling-Automatic-Punch-Free-Interior/dp/B0CPSPLQQX?ref_=v_sp_product_dpx However it closes the door far too fast and also slams the door so loudly. How can I adjust the speed it closes the door to a much slower speed? Thanks all

Length of mortar course
I am trying to estimate as accurately as possible the total length of mortar in our 3 bed semi To start with - the property is built on a slope - so the rear is an extra 1 metre of wall depthI count roughly 60 brick courses with 215 * 65 mm bricks - with say 10mm between each course (for mortar)Then there's the vertical…

Cavity Wall Insulation - Damp/Damage Claims
Hi, My parents had cavity wall insulation installed in 2005, the expanding foam type. They now have serious damp/water ingress problems on the gable end which I believe is due to driving rain. I therefore don't think it was appropriate to have it installed originally and would like to understand what recourse we have over…

House alarms - any recommendations?
Hi all, I already have a Ring doorbell, so perhaps that's an option. Something without an ongoing subscription would be a bonus. Any good or bad experiences which you'd like to share?

Mortar application for concrete blocks
Hi Just doing some patch plastering and there's gaps between some of the concrete blocks. I can get a 4.5" scraper in the gap but it's 3-5mm wide. I'm attempting to press mortar in and catch any surplus but it really needs injecting in. Just wondering if there's an easier way of reapplying mortar here. Any help appreciated.

Which form of kitchen extension is the lesser evil - demolition or dead space?
We have lived in our house for about a year and are looking to do a kitchen extension on the back of our house to bring the 70s house into the modern age. We love the quirkiness of the house but because of the layout it means I'm struggling to extend in a way that doesn't mean demolition of walls or creating dead space...…

What do you think of this cellar?
Considering putting in an offer on a lovely Victorian semi, but it has this cellar. I don’t intend to make it habitable, but wondered what your views on the black/damp bit might be? It’s mainly round this chimney area and not in the rest of the space. Thanks for your insights 😊🙏

Remortgaging for new kitchen?
I’m looking at completely renovating my kitchen as it is currently falling apart. The only issue is I would know the best way to go about funding it. Would remortgaging be the best way to go? I am currently 2 and a half years into a 5 year fixed mortgage, the interest rate is 3.03%. I did the deal for this mortgage…

Neighbour not cooperating
Hi, a few months ago I noticed a few small dark stains on the party wall that look like damp stains, like shadows under the paint. They are not even visible unless you watch them from a certaiin position and in certain lighting conditions, but in that case they show clearly. The damp meter (I know, it's unreliable, but…

Beware of Currys. You can't change your mind once you open the box
As I have just discovered, if you buy a TV (or anything else, I believe) and you have opened the box Currys doesn't let you return it. You are stuck with it unless faulty. Next time I buy a TV I am going to go elsewhere... Argos lets you return stuff and so does Amazon. Not sure about other outlets, but I bet they do.…

Hose pipe - gravity question.
I have moved our hose pipe round the corner and lifted it for aesthetic and practical usage purposes. It is a newly installed tap. There is a small loss of pressure since the move. My thinking is that if I cut the pipe leading to the reel, the water would flow out of the tap, travel almost horizontally to the reel and the…

Porch paintwork replacement
My front porch has been neglected for a while (largely by the previous owners) and the layer of paint on the single skin brickwork wall is peeling away and needs to be reinstated. Talk to me as if I am ten years old. What do I need to do to firstly remove the existing paintwork on the wall and what paint product will be…
