Ants in a acer pot.
Noticed my acer was looking a bit sad and it has been a tad neglected this year. But while chucking some food in its direction, I noticed an ants nest has taken up residence. How do I persuade them to move emsewhere? Preferably organically.

Blueberry pest
My blueberry bushes were coming along a treat this year, then over the past week something has stripped nearly all the leaves off. I think they’ve eaten the berries too as the crop is virtually non existent (about 10 days ago they had a goodly crop of berries). What is it and what do I do now? First treat them for the…

Replacements for rose bushes
Ok so I have seven rose bushes, hybrid tea types, in my front garden planted by previous owners. They appear very old and may even date to when the road was laid out in 1949. Anyway each year I prune them in the late winter and try to keep them healthy by spraying against blackspot, but invariably I miss some treatments..…

UK Frost, Hardiness Zones & Sowing Dates
Thought I'd start a new thread on these subjects rather than derail the other long running threads. Links to calendars, monthly to do lists & zone maps are most welcome as is the discussion of how helpful the H zoning system actually is (and is there confusion between the USDA system as applied to the UK versus the RHS…

High density planting
We have a small (12" square) plastic tub - filled with over 100 (10*10) spring onions - that are really thriving - we have been picking them for 2 months and the numbers don't seem to be diminishing ... The seeds cost £1.25 and we have only used about 1/4 of them

Any suggestions on what to plant for a quick growing evergreen hedge (1m high) to cover a 5 meter span but grown in pots?

Can you use soil under lawn to grow?
Hi all. Briefly, I want to use part of my lawn to grow something for my 2 year old daughter to learn to water and care for. Is it as simple as cutting some lawn up to expose the soil? Also, what would you recommend as a nice easy starter to get a toddler interested?

Best evergreen near railway track - Help!
Hi all, We recently bought a house and at the end of the garden we have a railway line. This is about 3-4 metres back from our fence, up a bank about 2m high. We want to plant some evergreen trees/hedge to make the garden more private and to help block out some of the noise, although it isn't anywhere near as loud as I was…

Raised bed question.
We moved into our new house with a lovely garden. Efforts thus far have gone on general garden maintenance and the house. However, I really want to get back to growing my own veg, which I’ve always done in pots. However, the new house has a big greenhouse and a decent sized raised bed. However, the raised bed is super…

Replacement Greenhouse
I am preparing our home and garden by trying to get major works and expenses out of the way while we're still working. That way if we over run on costs we're able to work a little longer. So far we've plans underway for the house, now looking hard at the garden. I have had a quote for some major work, and my 8 x 6…

will any seeds grow now, or too late to plant?
Recently got the gardening bug, and had a very pretty and productive year so far, china asters, cosmos (some gre to about 5ft tall!), sunflowers, french marigolds, all from seed (we are both quite proud of them all) Will anything grow this year if we plant them now, or have we missed the boat? Only asking as our sunflowers…

Need advice for improving garden fence
I recently bought a house and have begun to notice that the garden fence is not as opaque as it first seemed! The lower half is a brick wall and then there is a small gap before vertical fence boards, which are on the roadside of the horizontal support rails. The boards are separated by just a couple of millimeters, which…

Neighbours Hedge Overhanging
What is the law in respect of a neighbours beech hedge that was planted about 10 years ago, they would come round and trim it periodically. The neighbours sold up about 4 years ago and the new neighbours have not trimmed it at all. The hedge is now over 3m tall and expanding rapidly over the top of the boundary fence in…

Pallet Disposal.
I have 7 full size and 2 half size ones that I need to get rid of (after major gardening project) but am struggling to find places/companies that would take them away (i'm not looking to get money for them). I don't have the means of taking them to recycling centres etc or i'd just do it myself. Online searches of local…

Japanese Knotweed - one shoot!
My neighbour was watering my garden whilst I was away and has told me he has discovered Japanese Knotweed at the bottom. I had no idea what it looked like. I've phoned several companies and have had eye watering quotes, just to carry out a survey, and just one has said it was free and they are coming next week. Once I…

Potting on ?
I've bought two tiny Barnsley Babies. They are for the patio. It's probably a silly question but do I pot themon into their final containers (which are big enough for when the Babies grow to their full size) or pot them up gradually, increasing the size of the pot each time? They are going to look a bit silly in the…

Plant ID help needed
Can anyone help identifying these plants in my garden? The first two seem to have appeared out of nowhere this year. I love the purple one and the bees are going insane over it so will probably keep it if it's not going to cause any issues. The second one will have to go as it's incredibly fast-growing. We were worried…

Electric lawn mowers
Hi chaps, I've used a manual rotary mower for years, but I'm at the point where I have had enough of raking up leaves and twigs after every cut. Are electric mowers any good at hoovering up such greenery?
