Hi, I am relatively new to gardening so I was wondering if you could help. I want to grow some flowers such as cosmos, marigolds, etc in some planters that I have. I have bought the seeds but I was just wondering what compost and conditions is the best to grow the seeds. I have Miracle-Gro All Purpose Enriched Compost 50L…

Seeding a new lawn
Afternoon everyone Since purchasing my first home in 2017, I have seriously neglected the garden to the extent that the lawn is bare, compacted and patchy with moss. I've taken the decision to seed a new lawn from scratch as a) it will provide me with some much needed gardening experience and b) saving for a wedding means…

Pruning leylandi trees

Free garden design software?
Hi all, I've spent days searching online for a free garden design software, I can't seem to find one that isn't geared towards house design (so doesn't have much scope for garden building materials, and quite complicated to use) or the one I did start to use - Gardena, is very basic, is frustrating to use with limited…

No worms!
I never ever see any worms in my garden and don't know whether this is a good thing. I have been adding organic matter in the form of compost to my patch and the soil structure is well improved. Should I see about 'importing' some worms?

Grass growing through plants
How do I stop this happening? The grass is all around them and through them and with some of them, it’s so bad, I can hardly see the plant anymore. I think one has stopped growing because of it. I don’t know what to do. I can’t spray weed killer because that will kill the plants too!

Worm compost
I will shortly harvest my first batch of worm compost. Have to persuade the worms to migrate into the next bin first. Would putting old container soil in and mixing their dinner into it be a good idea? The compost they have made is beautiful stuff, in so far as one can ascribe beauty to such a thing. How best to use it? I…

Fastest growing dense plants for boundary
We've got an established privet hedge for a boundary but it is fairly see through and has got quite big holes in places so I'm looking to plant extra bushes/hedging in the borders to cover the worst areas. I've had success with Lavatera & Buddleia in the past but can anybody suggest something else that grows large, quick &…

I know this will probably be an impossible task without a photo but I will try and describe untill i can take a pic. This weed has been growing on very poor soil (bit of garden that i havn't got round to sorting yet) and is now encroaching into lawn. It is really flat with tough fern like "branches" coming from a strong…

Weed, feed and mosskiller
Found this (actually 1kg tub) in Poundstretcher today. Good for 30 sq m and only £2.49. Most packs of this stuff seem huge, which is a waste if you only have a small lawn

London gardening help!
Hi all! Hoping for some advice, having recently moved into a London flat with a garden in dire need need of some help, and I'm apologetically very new to the gardening game (but very much enjoying it)!. Planter advice for a beginner
Hi I’m looking to put our house on the market in a month or so. I’m currently trying to dress up the exterior to make it more appealing. So I’m looking at cheap solutions for landscaping. I’ve had some planters made up to go under the windows. 5 in total. The ones that are made out of decking boards. They are about 40cm…

Ordered two lots of fruit bushes via Thompson and Morgan in early Feb when it a special offer appeared on the moneysavingexpert weekly email. Neither has arrived. Anyone else got theirs? Garden wall or fence it? Costs?
Hi all, new here! Have moved house 6 months ago and it's turning into a money pit!! We have 2 13ft 2m tall garden walls (single thickness with end pillars and one central) that are both on their way out along with a curved 1m long wall at the end of those. If I look at having the walls knocked down to the first 2-3 rows of…
