As title really, I had some trees cut down and now the stumps have branches / twigs spouting out of them again. I don't want them growing and would like to get rid. They are hardwood trees.
Any advice please

There are many videos on the web showing various methods. You can grind the stumps away, dig them out or chemically kill the stump and roots. All options have their own pros and cons.Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid0

Hammering rusty nails or grinding down and then pulling the roots works sometimes.0

If you keep removing the twigs/branches and any leaf growth itll eventually give up. Can take a long time for it to rot down.
You could drill holes and pore in epsom salts, will kill it. Again will rot down eventually
You can hire stump grinders that will make quick work of grinding the stump down. Roots will still be in place but wont grow back.
Or you can set it on fire (if its safe to do so).0 -
If you use the chemical stump killer, as I did successfully, make sure that the stumps are covered so that children and animals don't have access to the chemicals.0

Simplest solution is to cut vertical slits in the stump, or deep drilled holes if you have the gear, and pour in a strong mix of glyphosate weedkiller like Rosate 360. Cover with a weighted plastic bag or similar for a month, not because the weedkiller is particularly dangerous, but to stop rain washing it away.
Won't remove the stump but it will kill it.0 -

There is recent evidence to suggest that glyphosate IS dangerous so covering the stump is recommended for that reason as well as rain prevention.0 -

As I understand the research, there's no proof of serious danger through occasional exposure to the diluted product, and once dry, it should not affect pets/herbivores. If a danger existed, I'd expect better precautions than a weighted plastic bag. e.g. exclusion over an extended period.
Other posts have mentioned 'chemicals,' which is non-specific, so I can't comment on those. I sometimes spray chemical compounds besides glyphosate, and when I do, I follow the guidelines for exclusion, which might be for one or two weeks.0
