Bringing cucumbers in?
Cucumber newbie here: My cucumber plant has been outside in a sunny sheltered spot and has just had a late surge of setting fruit. Now that the weather is turning and it's getting colder at night, I wondered if it was worth bringing into the back porch (light and warm if the sun's out) so the rest of the cucumbers can…

I want to hide the neighbours house
Hi all I got good advice on planting on here a while back and am wanting more! I have a small garden 25' deep and 35' wide. At the end of my garden there is the side of my neighbours house. Ideally I would like to knock it down and extend my garden but I feel the owner and tenants might get the hump so I think planting…

Daft Question.......Digging Holes
I KNOW this is going to sound like a really daft question BUT I am going to ask it anyway. I have a self seeded silver birch tree which has grown very nicely for a few years in a pot which is about 32" deep. I am wanting to transplant it into my garden so it can shield a nasty new build at the bottom of my garden. I think…

Chilli plant colours
We’ve got 4 chilli plants that have given great numbers for the last 2 or 3 months, we thought we’d planted green chillis, but recently a lot are a yellow/lime green colour, and the odd one or 2 on a green producing plant are bright red Is there any reason for this? Not an issue, just wondering

Makita petrol pole hedge trimmer?
My battery powered pole trimmer is getting tedious to use and I am helping elderly friends with more hedge than the battery one can manage, as well as my own hedges. I quite fancy a petrol pole trimmer, especially the 4 stroke Makita series. However, the manual says branch diameter of 7mm, various adverts mention 21.5mm. I…

Labelling Cuttings
My husband has loads of rooted cuttings - roses, willow trees, and many others. Despite having a large garden we have no room for them and I had the idea that he may sell them next year at summer fetes, school fairs etc. Many of the roses are by David Austin. Does anyone know if it is legal for us to label them for sale…

Russian snowdrops

Raised beds/borders on the cheap?
We want to put a raised border in along the fence line. It's 4.8m long, then looking for roughly 45cm x 45cm but that's flexible. Simply putting the plants in the ground doesn't seem feasible as the soil is naff and full of rubble. I think sticking a few pots on the lawn against the fence would look odd. We're not far off…

Are these apples ready?
Hi all I have an apple tree in my garden, planted by the previous owner, which has born loads of apples. However I'm uncertain of the make and whether they are ready for consumption. All the apples have a slight abrasive skin texture and are dark green. However a few appear to have small areas of light green skin which has…

Protection for a New Shed
I am awaiting delivery of my new 7 x 5 shed in about a weeks time for my allotment. I decided to go for a decent tongue and groove shed, which hopefully will last at least 10 years (just hoping I make it for 10 years too) I am obviously keen to protect it properly. Looking at just one shop for now (Wilko) there seems to be…

Creeping Butterfly
This seems to have taken over my garden this year. I did my back in so was unable to weed. I still cannot dig them out. I bought organic weedkiller which did nothing. I then brought in the bad boys that I did not want to use. They had glyphosate which I thought would kill anything. One week later and they look untouched.…

Dealing with new housing estates factor

They said the knotweed is coming into their properry from time to time. My take on it is there are…

Wintering in conservatory vs plastic greenhouse
Starting to think about what to do with my plants over winter - they're all potted. I'm mainly concerned with the young dwarf peach and nectarine trees, and two bay saplings. We have a conservatory which gets very cold, so the door to the house will mostly be shut over winter. We'll warm it up for meals only, so I'm not…

Which bulbs will grow through bark chippings?
As per the title, which bulbs will grow through a 2-3" layer of bark chippings? I'm guessing daffs, tulips and aliums will be fine but would snowdrops, crocuses and bluebells struggle? Also should I plant the bulbs closer to the soil surface than you ordinarily would to account for the depth of the wood chip? Thanks in…
