Best Grass Seed
Been researching and it baffling with the 'best' grass seed to purchase to create a new lawn. I am looking for the following characteristics but it may have to be a compromise. Low maintenance, low susceptibility to weeds and disease Slow growing, so don't need to mow it often Low water requirements, ideally just watered…

Putting In Decking. Poison Ground?
Planning to put a bit of decking in over some stones. It fairly regularly sees weeds, so thinking I should water in some poison a few days before putting it in. Is there anything else I should do? Thanks!

Cleavers, Sticky Willy, or Galium Aparine
There's been a huge increase in this weed throughout my area of Devon this year. I wonder if others have observed similar rampantness? It's been widespread for long time and very successful in normal years, without drawing too much attention to itself, but I can't account for the dramatic difference this year. It doesn't…

Earwigs
Has anyone had or have experience of getting rid of earwigs in your garden? I went into the garden the other night to find 100's of the blasted things all over my plants. We spent years battling slugs/snail infestations and have only just managed to get on top of that, only to now have a new pest devouring our garden.…

Disappearing Alliums!
During the spring of 2018 we planted around 30 alliums (mostly Purple Sensation) amongst a similar number of box balls/pyramids on a well-drained, slightly sloping site in our new-to-us garden. That first summer they flowered and all was well. This spring only approximately 18 of the alliums came up, which was obviously…

Help needed: Laurel plants
Hi, Please could any of the "Greenfinger" experts give me a little advice....I have 7ft Laurel bushes that have been growing very well but have limited soil depth in the area where they were planted due to previous owner laying grass/borders over a concrete path. The way I've got round this is by building "raised" borders…

Help with gooseberries
My 4 red gooseberries have been decimated by what I think is gooseberry sawfly (never saw any, but looking at pictures they've definitely been eaten and the damage looks identical). My fault, I suppose, health hasn't been brilliant and I didn't check on them as I normally do. Not a single leaf remains; just the stalks of…

Anti-Burglar Bush!
I had a face looking through my window at 3.00 am a few days ago which has made me motivated to try and put an obstacle on the dirt outside to prevent this sort of tampering. I wanted to plant something like a Berberis (Japanese Barberry) or Pyracantha but my cousin reckons planting anything that close to the house will…

Moving shrubs/trees
We are planning to have a patio area and some raised beds put in our garden as well as possibly pushing back the strangely very large, deep border, it's currently about 6 meters deep and i reckon I could keep a cow in there and lose it for a week in the shrubs. We will take the opportunity to put some drainage in whilst at…

Managed to grow spring onions from Seeds
Well after trying for a couple of year to grow spring onions I have managed to grow seedlings and planted them in a raised bed, so far they are settling in well. Tried various soil compost combos, sewing direct into the raised beds, square pots, round pots (I know it makes no sense) Finally I started them in the greenhouse…

Hi There Has anyone recently bought Rattan Garden Furniture from Moda Furnishings or Feature Deco (or elsewhere) where you have received the products within a reasonable time period and been happy with the quality of the actual product? tasty strawberry recommends please
I've grown strawberries off & on over the years, more "off" lately This year is an "on year" plenty of yummy looking berries, but taste is just not there, not what one would know as proper strawberry taste of yore It maybe my old taste buds of course but I suspect it's the variety I've got. And of course in true gardener…

Can I prune overgrown shrubs in July?
I know I can't prune back when the birds are nesting but I think they've finished by now. I have lots of lovely shrubs around my garden which seemed ok in early spring but they are massive now. The ones that have finished flowering can I cut them back? My lovely raised bed that hubby made me is completely overshadowed now.…

Screening ideas for ugly house wall?
Good morning! We're tackling the garden bit by bit and I need some help please. Our kitchen window is driveway side and faces the neighbour's house, and their horrible yellow and tan (YELLOW AND TAN!!!) mismatched brick wall. There's a bed with hydrangeas there but it doesn't hide it well. I'm looking for ideas for things…

Can Pyracantha go in Planter Pot?
Is it wise to use Pyracantha Orange Glow/Fire Thorn in a large planter tub rather than in the ground, where i want it there is gravel with planter on the top. Could i keep this a certain size in a planter tub because the pic on the label shows it climbing up a wall. Planter is square 50cm high by 55cm wide.

Cordon Sweet Peas - next steps?
I’m growing cordon sweet peas for the first time. They’re doing really well and are already 7” tall and producing amazing blooms. I’m about to untie them and move them all to the next stake so they’ve got more room to grow but I reckon they’ll reach the top of the new stake again in a flash. Do I just keep repeating the…
