I have putting my own celery scraps in water to try and save money but when i try to pot them into soil once routed, they die on me!
Any tips on what to do after the water stage, is the pot deep enough and does it need to go outside or in etc?

Maybe there's not enough root to sustain growth - is it a supermarket celery ?
In any event, celery is easily killed by frost, so I'd keep 'em indoors now

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Given you can buy good quality seed of a variety chosen for UK easy growth for 89p for 200 seeds.... Um...

It is supermarket celery but they are failing inside my conservatory, wondering if they need cooler climate.

Maybe but i don't have the space to grow that many, to do this with scraps is the point of what i am trying, if it fails i have not lost 89p.

I tried growing from seed with little success - tiny plants, useable in stews, but little else. I've still got one outside the back door, 18 months old I think

There is always a risk of “damping off” when you transplant water-rooted cuttings into a soil-based compost.

You could try a coarser medium as an initial step - something’s like sand or grit. You could try sterilising the compost first (zap it in the microwave, then let it cool before use). You could try some fungicide in the water used to dampen the compost/watering the cuttings. You might find that your current process works ok in spring/summer when temperature and daylight are sufficient to make the plants vigorous enough to cope with the transplanting shock.

You could also keep them in a water-based medium, adding nutrients to the water.

But it all sounds like an awful lot of effort for celery! :)

Celery is notorious to grow as well and it survives Winter outside as mine did last year grown from seed, although it was mild Winter. I gave up growing it because celery likes lots of water as it grows, if it gets dry it becomes woody I watered mine a lot bit still not enough

Now if you want that salty/celery taste in a chilli/bollo/stew - turn to lovage - very easy to grow

I believe you can plant lovage now? My celery came as small plants from a regular guy at the farmer's market. Overwintered once but never really got going but cutting off a small stalk for use in a soffrito was plenty of fresh celery flavour.

I'll certainly get some more plants from him but you have to get to the market early as he sells out quickly.
