Kitchen Garden magazine - special edition at Sainsburys?
Sainsburys had Kitchen Garden magazine - November issue on sale for £5.99 with 8 packets of seeds included. I don't usually buy this but it looks as though it usually only comes with 1 packet of seeds so I think this may be a special edition. Seeds in my pack were all Kings Seeds £1.20 to £1.60 per packet RRP: Purple…

Can I slice a small bit off the trunk of my privet hedge without damaging it?
I'm fitting in some 2 foot stone edging beside my paving slabs which have a strong privet hedge running alongside. The hedge is very well established and has possibly been growing for 60 years or so. Three of the trunks are a bit too close to the slabs and I've had to slice a bit off one trunk to allow the edging to be…

I do cover them overnight. I have taken leaves off, flowers, small tom's to force them into going red. It is a good crop but…

Azaleas - overwintering in pots..?
I bought a few orange blossoming Azalea plug plants from a reputable dealer earlier this year. They've done well and grown on such that they're now in 3ltr pots and a foot high. Any advice as to how to keep them through the winter? I have some much larger plants in bigger pots and these seem to have no trouble in surviving…

New plants to put into place
I have had some plants delivered and after reading the instructions it advises planting out as soon as possible, however, it also says don't plant into waterlogged ground. Obviously the weather forecast is wet for a good few days. I am wondering how best to go forward, i don't have a greenhouse to place them in.

Container pear tree recommendations..?
On my travels recently I've seen small pear trees growing successfully in patio containers and giving quite an impressive crop. Has anyone here been so lucky and maybe able to recommend a variety? Dwarfing rootstock grown, I assume.

Acoustic Fence (blocking out road noise)
I’ve been looking at ways to mitigate sound coming into the garden. I live alongside a busy road leading to and from the town I live in. There is a thin hedge there at the moment running along the side of my property facing the road. The potential plan is to install a fence behind this hedge. I have been researching…

Tatty Fushchia bushes
I will be moving house soon and not being much of a gardener I have a question. The door is on the side of the house and when we first saw the house the pathway down to the door had a lovely fushchia in full flower and the garden had obviously been cared for. But the person who lived in the house had died and the house has…

ISO Advice: Scented walkway
Hello all, I have recently dug out and laid a new garden path (photo attached). I would like to arrange for the path to be a scented/fragrant walk way. I would be grateful for advice on: (i) what to plant along either side of the pictured path to achieve variety and year round interest; and (ii) how many plants I will need…

Neighbours hedge
Hiya! Not sure if this is correct place to post but need some advice please. My neighbours hedge/shrubs always come to my part of the garden, which is fine, I have no issue with. I usually cut it back to the boundary and then dispose. I’ve been lighting a fire, which is the way I dispose of it, but neighbours, including…

Wot, no wallflowers?
I usually get bare rooted wallflowers round about now, a bunch of 10 for a quid, several bunches to dot round the garden and put in pots in the backyard for cheap spring colour and scent. My local independent nursery says their usual growers haven’t grown them this year and they’re looking for alternative suppliers.…

Boris - friend of the slug
Clearly short of more urgent things to worry about, the government has announced the banning of metaldehyde slug pellets. Sales will be prohibited after March 2021 and existing stocks will have to be used within one year. The full story is in Farner's…

Sad cypress tree
Hello folks, I took a punt and ordered a pair of cypress trees online. One arrived healthy; full; and well. The other arrived ‘threadbare’; and with broken branches and crown. I would like to care for the second tree back to full health and a match to its partner. How do I do that? As always, simple instructions for the…

Deciduous roses - or not?
Bit of a panic here. I bought a climbing rose because the scent was amazing, the colour right and they've been hard to find in these times. It's also a newly developed one 1999, and I've only bought old roses pre 1940's before. I've just seen that it's classed deciduous, then that 'roses are deciduous' and this isn't…

Identify this Garden Tree, Can I cut it down?
Hi all We are buying a new house and it has this tree slap bang in the middle of the drive. If you look closely you can see that whatever it drips it has damaged the White car bonnet. I would like to identify the tree to see if I can cut it down. As far as I know the house is not in a conservation area. Thanks in advance…

Bluebell bulbs
Hello, Would anyone be able to recommend where, ideally online, I may buy, good quality, bluebell bulbs? Since I have no experience with bulbs, I would also be grateful if someone might guide me on what is a reasonable price to pay for them. Many thanks and best wishes.

Weeds in flowerbed
What is the best way to prepare the soil to be a flowerbed? I am in the process, turned the soil over and over, and over. In some bits I have sprayed weed killer, but I want to save some plants that are still in there. It hasn't been used as a flowerbed for quite some time, so there is grass and weeds. How do councils do…
