Pruning time or is it?
We have been away and I am now considering if pruning or at least tidy up is worth doing now as they are all a bit overgrown (and overlapping the lawn!): - 2 types of hebe - 1 hot lips - Mexican Orange I thought we could prune only if they had stopped flowering but they are still flowering! Is it too risky to prune now?…

GreenFly - A 'flylady style' gardening thread with weekly tasks to tame your garden
What do we mean by GreenFly? Over on old style there is a long running and supportive community who focus on getting the house clean and tidy in smaller steps. A group of us thought that something similar for taming the garden would be very useful so here it is. The idea is that by doing little and often we can get on top…

Retaining wall for patio
Hello, am building some two retaining walls for a patio next to the house (see very rough sketch attached!). The garden slopes away from the back of the house, so a patio needs retaining walls to support it (the retaining walls are green in the sketch). The aim is for 4 courses of brick on top of a concrete footing. One…

Blank Canvass Garden - Design Inspiration Needed
Hello everyone, I am an avid reader of this thread and am in need of the collective advice. I moved house last year - downsized to a lovely 1930's semi. I had a large leafy garden in my old home but it is fair to say this new garden is rather bereft of any charisma. I attach a pic of the garden - now this is from the…

Recommendations for pre-made wormery
Hi, I am interested in starting up a wormery to use eg vegetable peelings to create nutrition for growing various vegetables. I have watched quite a few YouTube videos about various ways you can make your own and I think I have a reasonable grasp of the way you use them. However, I am not at all handy when it comes to…

What fragrant climbers???
Today we've decluttered 2 failing wooden arches in the garden. Woodworking chap has installed 2 new ones, made to order and nicely painted a pale green. Just need to get stuff growing up them now. (well, not now, likely in the spring I guess) OH tutted repeatedly every time I talked about doing this. And now that it's done…

Planning permission required for sloped garden terrace?
The retaining wall (pictured, currently propped up by scaffolding poles) is failing and needs to be replaced. I plan to bring the wall out by another metre to create a larger, flat lawn area with balustrade for safety. Do I need planning permission for this? The only thing I can find online regarding permitted development…

What to do with lawn borders?
Hi all My smallish garden is a work in progress. After moving in, I've grown a decent lawn on clay soil from seed, and sown wildflowers along my bottom border. The left border is empty and covered up with a tarp, the right border needs weeding. I have a handful of plants and some bulbs to put in, but apart from that I…

Harvesting rain water ideas
We’re currently boiling tap water for our indoor plants, which isn’t very energy efficient or environmentally friendly. The boiled water sits in jugs until it’s cool, usually used the next day. I’d like to switch to rainwater, but it needs to be completely free from insects and debris. Ideally, I’d like a ready made…
