Drying washing in winter
Now that the weather is turning wet and cold, it's getting more difficult to dry washing outside. I generally use the tumble dryer only under protest. I let the washing machine complete it's cycle, then re-set it for an another spin. It's surprising how much drier the washing is and it really cuts down on drying time and…

Cheap Meals 2020
Having had a long absence from OS I reread some of the cheap meal/recipe threads to get some ideas for this weeks meals (on unpaid leave at the moment due to family issues). One of them was singing the praises of corned beef which back in the day I used to love... Mr T website now states that this is £2.30 for 300 g -…

Using ordinary chocolate vs cooking chocolate in baking
I am going to try some baking this winter. I saw a recipe which specified cooking chocolate. The supermarket basic chocolate is much cheaper than cooking chocolate. Are the two types of chocolate interchangeable?

Re-Upholsterers.......... Help Please....
We have an old leather 3 piece suite bought 15-20 years ago. The leather is still in fabulous condition. No rips or tears but the seating is all part of the unit. No separate cushions. Consequently, over time these have flattened and now you can feel the bare bones of the sofa and one of the armchairs. Can this inner…

Buying a refurbished Delonghi coffee machine on Ebay - warranty/guarantee?
Hi, I'm thinking of purchasing a pretty expensive Delonghi coffee machine, described as a brand new but refurbished return. According to the seller I should be able to register it with Delonghi as a gift as I wont have the receipt. Does anyone have any experience of this? I just want to be sure I'm covered if it breaks…

Weekly Flylady Thread 26 October 2020
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

Sloe Gin cocktail (small amount of sloe gin)
Recently my MIL died. A few years back she made me some sloe gin as a Christmas present, which I'd forgotten about until a few weeks ago. After she passed, we had some friends round (when still allowed to!) and all drank a shot to her. It was quite 'syruppy' There's around 2 shots left and what I would dearly like to do is…

Candlewick bedspread question
The Husband is a duvet hogger so we went with sheets and blankets when we moved in together. We just acquired our first cotton candlewick bedspread, from Chums and it seems to me that there are four ways of using it. 1. Just pull it up so it drapes over the pillows and bed 2. Tuck part of it under the pillows like a…

Washing up liquid
I got fed up waiting for the half empty washing up liquid bottle to run down so that I could squeeze it into the basin so I transferred the liquid into an empty sauce bottle and now I just flick the lid and squeeze. :) Why have the manufacturers not gone in the direction of upside down bottles the same as the sauce bottles?
