Make do, Mend and Minimise in 2019
New year so time for a new thread - welcome to the 2019 make do, mend and minimise thread :D For me, this year is going to be about minimising a lot of our stuff (after all how many books, DVDs, clothes, etc do two people really need and I've definitely got slight hoarding tendencies, there's heaps of stuff about the flat…

2019 Fashion on the Ration Challenge
Welcome to the 2019 Fashion On The Ration Challenge. The 2018 thread was very successful and can be found here. Based on the original 1941 Clothing Rations, several of us are continuing our "Fashion on the Ration" challenge into 2019. Even after last year’s challenge, I still have an overflowing wardrobe. Half of my…

Weekly Flylady Thread 31st December 2018
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Crispy towels
I just bought a Lakeland heated airer, works great! Only thing I find when using airers and washing lines is the crispy towels. I don’t want to use fabric softener. I know you’re not supposed to with towels any way. Any tips for getting nice soft clothes without having to buy expensive detergents? :o

How have you saved money in 2018?
Please share so we can use each other's tips for a more resource-efficient 2019! Most of my spending is by credit card, so its been very useful to review this and think about my monthly expenditure and what can be cut back on. My main savings are from walking rather than driving, and resisting filling up my tank…

Steps towards zero waste - 2019
Through 2018 I have been reading a lot about the impact of our waste on the environment. I have made a couple of small changes but seeing our bulging bins at the end of Christmas isn't good! It is a little odd as once you start thinking about excessive packaging you see just how much of it there is everywhere! I don't…

Wassup with the spuds these days!
There was a time - when I was a young lass, I'm in my 70s now! - that I could buy half a cwt (25kgs) of potatoes which would last me months. Nowadays, I get a 2-5kg bag and within a few weeks, they're all sprouted and useless. I've tried storing them everywhere - in the fridge, in the shed, in the dark, you name it!…

2019 - A Clutter Free Life
To use Guineapigsqueaks/Sa1sysoo words “A new thread for declutterbugs in [STRIKE]2015 2016 2017 2018 [/STRIKE] 2019!" I made a fairly good start in 2018 but 2019 is THE YEAR that I finally get to grips with a full declutter - I would like to have NO rooms/cupboards/drawers of Doom & I would like to have a revamped…

Decent iron for occasional use
As the title suggests, I need an iron for my new home. Though having spent far more hours than I’d like ironing the ex dh shirts in the past I’ve gone the other way around and do my best to not need to iron now! Though I do still need an iron for the bits that need it. I want a decent iron that will work well and be…

2019 - A More Old Style Year
2018 hasn't been an awful year - especially compared to other people. But at this strange time after Christmas but before the New Year I get into a reflective mood. I am realising that I have lost myself! Somewhere in between working a violent job being a full time step mum as well as having a house of clutter I have…

2018 Christmas Leftovers Thread
Is there a thread covering the Christmas leftovers? I didn’t see one so thought I’d start it. Given the amount of food everyone purchases for Christmas Day, what are your plans for your leftovers? Here are mine. There was only two of us for Christmas this year, me and my DH. We celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve and had…

Leftover 3 fish roast
Hello all, I hope you are enjoying this lovely Christmas time. I was lucky enough to get a much reduced 3 fish roast of salmon, cod and smoke haddock. Just having some with home made chips today. There will be lots of leftovers. I was thinking of freezing it in lunch size portions because I'm the only one who will eat it…

Sharpening steel
Not entirely sure where this post belongs, but here goes ... My kitchen knife set came with a ridged sharpening steel. The ridges have now worn smooth. Is this why I'm finding it difficult to get my knives sharp? Or am I just not putting in enough welly? If I need a new tool - what sort should I get? Another steel ironed…
