does anyone have any experience of these? do they work? thanks in advance!

They do work because the machine agitates the laundry and ball at the same time. However, they only work on clothes that need freshening up not any that are dirty or stained, because there isn't a 'soap'.
I have used them in the past as well as soap nuts which work the same as above despite the 'soap' in the name. You might say that you 'save' on every third wash, say, that doesn't include 'dirty' items.0
