There was a time - when I was a young lass, I'm in my 70s now! - that I could buy half a cwt (25kgs) of potatoes which would last me months. Nowadays, I get a 2-5kg bag and within a few weeks, they're all sprouted and useless. I've tried storing them everywhere - in the fridge, in the shed, in the dark, you name it!

Please, does anyone know how to make a bag of spuds last longer? Like many other old/single people, a 5kg bag will last me months and it's very distressing to find more than half the bag only fit for the bin in no time at all.

I did spend some time trying to figure out where to post it but in the end, my imagination failed me! Sorry!

Now I can't see which section it's in! Can you advise me?

  • That's ironic because I looked at that section several times but felt that the title meant it was a kind of archive that shouldn't be posted in!

    How funny (on me!) :rotfl:

    Thank you for your time

Are you able to buy them direct from farmers? The supermarkets potatoes may be years old before you get them.
  • Good suggestion but unfortunately that's not an option for me.
Most farm shops are miles away.

    Thanks anyway.

  • I find it's more of a problem with washed potatoes. Our homegrown ones keep better with the soil on.
Will be watching this thread with interest as I've notice the general quality of standard white spuds is more hit and miss these days.

Can you buy them loose, few at a time as you need them?

It might seem to cost more in money, but if you're able to use them all and have zero waste then it probably won't.
  • Oh dear - I have been bad at explaining myself - I do that but even a few still go off if I leave them more than a few days.

But my question was, they never USED to. Does no-one remember those halcyon days?

  • I remember very well when spuds kept well for ages as when I had a family at home I used to buy the 56lb sacks. But now I buy a small bag for the two of us and they sprout and go off very quickly, I do take them straight out of any, dare I say it plastic wrapping and put them into little sack veg bags and keep under the sink in the dark, this helps a bit. As other posters have said it’s the washed spuds that don’t last, and sounding like an Old Foggey they just don’t taste the same either!
