What to do with cous cous?
Hi, I have about 250g - 300g of dried cous cous hanging about which I am loathed to throw out. Thing is, as much as I have tried it, except for the odd whim when I might buy a deli tub - I just don't really like it - its a bit too much like eating the bottom of a budgie cage :rotfl: Are there any recipes that I can use it…

Being the only 'OldStyler' in your friendship group.
Is there anyone else who is the only oldstyler in your friendship group? Many of my friends have double the income that i do, since they are married/with long term partners and i am a single pringle. To get together they all go to Starbucks/Costa, clothes shopping etc. I don't do any of that, as i am concentrating on…

Good budget buys at supermarket?
Is there a thread anywhere with recommended budget buys from supermarkets? When I was last on the site a year or so ago, I remember learning that Asda did a good budget jar of curry sauce and very cheap packets of instant custard. I cannot seem to see a thread about such stuff anywhere - am trying to economise in the run…

Loss of liquid when cooking casseroles
I often make a large beef or oxtail meat casserole in a jumbo le Creuset cast iron pan but find one of the consequences of a long cook is loss of liquid. This reduces the end amount of food available. I cook at around 160 C and put a sheet of foil between the lid and pan to reduce evaporation but this still happens. Does…

Acrylic painters, a stay wet palette for next to nothing
Hi, I came across a stay wet palette for a ludicrous price last week so I thought I'd share my solution. . I've got an old plate, although the top of an ice cream container will do just as well, and I lie 2 pieces of cheap kitchen roll on it. . I pour some cold water onto the kitchen roll. Enough so it feels wet but not…

Beginners dress sewing
Hello, not sure if this is the place to put this post. I inherited a sewing machine which I can basically use - I've made bunting, cushion covers and the like. And, about 12 years ago I made a skirt and dress but had a nightmare with zips and gave up. I would like another go at sewing and want to make a simple dress. I…

Overflowing wine in demijohn?
I am currently making wine using a wilko kit. I've got to the stage where I add cooled boiled water to top it up (3 days after I started as the kit advised), but I must have filled the Demi John too much and it all started to froth up and bubble up through and out of the air lock. I took the air lock out, washed it and…

Vegan Slow Cooker Ideas
I'm a chef but I'm totally new to using a slow cooker and I was wondering what meat free stuff I can make that won't turn to mush? I'm sure you folks will have some great ideas. So far my wife has made some chilli and a tomato ragu in it but I haven't had much success :o
