O/S Daily Saturday 24th September 2016

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.

Morning everyone

Hugs to those that want/need them x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Now light, cloudy and overcast but dry, yesterday as expected turned into another sunny day. Washing line dried.

DH and myself up and enjoying first cuppas of the day, I have to go to work this morning.

Dinner last night was chicken and bacon kievs, chips and beans/salad for the menfolk, I had ham and mushroom omelette and salad, ice cream for dessert. Tonight till be southern fried chicken pieces (oven cooked), bbq ribs, salad, stuffed peppers and rice and HM coleslaw.

Was reasonably productive again yesterday, got the shopping done, then had my beautician appointment, bought DH some nougat as we have travelling fair in our town at the moment, I managed to get a sponge cake made, so just need to put jam and buttercream inside it, and made 2 doz mince pies, should really have made something else, but lost my mojo a bit by the end, but then spent some time looking at my grocery spend, that's scary, so have written down my grocery spend and am doing the grocery challenge just on my own in my diary, our spend in that area seems to have shot up, some of that is due to not cooking and baking so much, I don't thrown very much food away now, but have freezers full to the brim and a full stock cupboard, but very often struggle to make a meal - if that makes sense. I definitely do need to defrost the outside freezer, so that is on the "to do" list, I'll enlist DS2 on one of his days' off college to give me a hand with that, I'll then have a much clearer idea of what's in there and it will make room, I'm thinking I should go back to doing a big meat/fish shop at the beginning of the month, as we have a couple of excellent butchers that are good value, you can bulk buy, then bag it up, I seem to be able to make the money go further, we'll see. Also that would mean I could go just to 1 SM - I'd just need to visit one of the main SM's once a month to stock up on toilet rolls, and the 1 or 2 other bits I can't get in MrA**is, my shopping is definitely cheaper in there, but then can't get everything I need.

Menfolk have a few jobs to do this morning whilst I'm at work, I think we'll be visiting the outlaws and my parents at some point over the weekend, we have leg of lamb for lunch tomorrow (was expensive, but asked the butcher in SM if they had any, he got some out cut it then weighed and told me how much it would be, and I didn't like to say it was too expensive) so we'll be having that tomorrow, but I'll keep some of the meat back and it'll become part of another meal or I'll freeze it for another day.

Keeps safe and well x

    Good morning everyone.

    Thanks for the thread nmlc.

Last evening with Prof Brian Cox and Robin Ince was fabulous. I can't say I understood everything he said but I didn't expect to. His mind is so brilliant the tiny insight to it was a thrill. Cosmology is too complex for me, however being taken on his wonderful journey to theories about pre-Big Bang times had me wanting to know more.

Today it's back to more mundane activities. I'm taking mum shopping and then I'll head home I think. That's if the predicted storm doesn't arrive.

I hope everyone has a good Saturday. .
  • Morning everyone, I've been up for a couple of hours and it is getting light now. Hoping for a dry day.

Had a really busy day yesterday and went out for lunch with a friend.

Nothing much planned for the weekend, other than some much-neglected housework, washing and ironing.

Hope everyone is well and love to those who are under the weather and/or have poorly relatives.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • Morning All

Boy, it's rough out there, have a safe journey Gers. Glad you enjoyed the talk.
How lovely of your Gran Speky, she obviously wants to see you enjoy the money.

Did bits and bobs yesterday including getting a haircut. Took a pair of trousers back to a shop yesterday as I paid £28 for them last Saturday and they were all on a special offer of £19 yesterday. Went to another branch and re-bought them! For once I hadn't taken the tags off and had the receipt.

Need to go and get some supplies this morning and may clean and re-arrange the living room later.

Hope you are all well and looking after yourselves/relatives. Take care. XX

    Thanks for the thread nmlc.
Gers, glad you had a good time.
Hugs to LWW, Dumpling, Lainey, Hilstep and anyone else in need
My L&M has a cuppa, DGD9 is still asleep, she took a book to bed with her last night and probably read until late.
When she wakes up we will make sausage rolls, we used to make cakes but when she discovered I could make sausage rolls she put in a request. I do cheat however and make my pastry in my food processor.
My L&M looked after DGD2 for a couple of hours yesterday, boy did he sleep well last night, she had him running around after her non-stop.
We have a cake sale in aid of MacMillan at work next week so I've been asked to make sausage rolls for that too, instead of cakes.
And in November I need to make enough cakes and savoury nibbles for 200, so I need to get my thinking cap on as to what I can make fairly quickly over the weekend before, all suggestions gratefully received.
I can hear movement from upstairs so DGD is up.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.
  • Morning All My, it is nippy out there lol

Thanks for the thread nmic. Hugs and positive vibes to those in need of them. A big cup of whatever you like - and love and light to anyone in a dark place at the moment xx

Gers, that sounded like a good brain workout! Cosmology and astronomy really does put some of life's niggles into perspective - so much stuff!!

Off shortly to take Mum out shopping. She says she feels old (83 last week)- she still runs rings around me lol! Hope everyone has a lovely calm weekend xx

    Morning everyone,

Thanks for the thread nmlc, I too do my own version of the GC with a little notebook in which I do my menu plan, shopping list and noting how much I spend. Also have a section where make a note of which store does the best tasting and valued goods, for example we like the aldi ground coffee so I know to pick up some packets when we visit. It's not an exact science but works for me.

The meeting at the hospital was relatively productive, at least we all know where we stand now and have a plan to work to. I honestly think that Mum is in denial to a certain extent as to what is happening but then again she wasn't / didn't want to be party to the conversation re timescales etc. All we can do is support her fully in whatever decisions she makes.

Not many plans for today, all housework is done and am up to date with washing/ironing, the joys of not working and the need to clean when stressed :( I did have plans to go over the yard and clip Billy as his winter coat is growing fast, he is a warm horse but I want to rug him this winter to protect his arthritic leg so will need to keep his chest clear so he doesn't overheat. Problem is it's really windy here today and that is not a good idea as the hair goes everywhere!

What a lovely surprise from your Gran Speky good for you to accept as no doubt will please her no end.
Blessings and hugs to all those who need, hope you all have a good day x
  • Good Morning everyone ,
bright and sunny here at the moment and quite warm as well. <<Hugs>> to all who are in need of one.

Need to do some 'bottoming out' indoors this morning, but am off out to a charity quiz tonight that my friend bought a place for me at, but I shall provide some nibbles for us all.

No shopping to go out for at least, only been three times food shopping since 26th August, :) plenty of stuff still in stock. I am making an effort to eat down the freezer stuff as I want to get it defrosted before Christmas, plus I am belt-tightening a bit at the moment .Luckily I only have 4-5 dinners a week to actually cook as I go to Dds on a Sunday for dinner and often bring back left-overs that she hasn't got enough to feed her tribe with:) and Tuesday nights I eat as part of the quiz night price at the local pub (£2.00 including the quiz a bargain I think ):) I dug something out last night from the freezer, and I am hoping its a small piece of steak :) (unlabelled) and I will have that for an early dinner tonight with some salad also found some somerset blue cheese that was Y/S and frozen so that will do with some crackers and grapes for lunch.
I must remember to label things more in future :0 although its sometimes a nice surprise when I find something I had forgotten about :)
Hope you all have a good day whatever you are doing
    Cheers chums
    JackieO xx
  • Morning, (((((((((((hugs)))))))))) if you need one.

Bright but windy. My clock had a hissy fit this morning, its one of those that takes a signal from somewhere overseas at 2am. When I looked at it, it said 9.45. I shot up in bed and then looked at the alarm clock on OH's side of the bed, 7.45. No idea what happened there.

OH wants to tidy up the nursery area at the side of the house and move the tomato house to the side of the the plastic green house that's there.

My friend gave me 5 paper white bulbs yesterday, I need to get some bulb fibre for them, they will make the house smell lovely hopefully at Christmas.

I need to put my thinking cap on to get something for her. She is nearly blind, so its difficult to know what to get. I used to buy bulbs that could go into the garden after they had flowered.

I need to do a shopping list for Morrison, there are some things I get from there I cannot get anywhere else, we will go tomorrow. I want to go to Boyes and also the Card Factory. I always get our diaries from there. No parking fees on Sunday, otherwise its 80p an hour and double on Tuesdays.

I have a bowl of tomato's waiting to be turned into tomato puree, need to get a large onion from outside, so that's the first job for this morning.

How about something scented, that she will be able to enjoy? Maybe soap to put into her undies drawer, or a jasmine or stephanotis plant if not too expensive?

    Morning all,

Nice bright day here and quite warm too, I have two loads on the line and another in the wm should all dry well today.

Log burner arrived and is as nice as we thought cant wait now for the chap to fit it on Wednesday. It came with a free fire pit for the garden so might try that out tonight.

Got to have a good clean through today as dd's young man is coming to stay for the weekend he arrives at 5 tonight so plenty of time to get things done, we also need to nip to the shop for a few bits for the week.

I have booked an appointment to look at a new car tomorrow mine is really on its last legs and wont last much longer at all, going to look at a new one and try to work out finances.
