New oven - recommendations?
I hope no-one minds me briefly repeating a thread here on Old Style which I've posted elsewhere - I suspect there are a fair number of cooks and baking addicts here who might be able to help me! Has anyone bought an electric oven in the last three years or so which they are happy with? I would be particularly interested to…

Good place to hide cash and other valuables?
If there are no floor boards (concrete flat). is the best place to put money etc in plastic waterproof box and under kitchen units behind board on floor? Thought about a box in corner of unit which could be seen as boxed in pipes or something but is plastic box under units best idea?

Home made stir fry sauce ?
One of my favourite ways of using up stuff left over in the salad drawer is a stir fry and very economical too - but not as economical if I need to buy ready made sauces. Does anyone have a favourite way of making a home made stir fry sauce from cupboard ingredients? Thanks.

Duvet dilemma
I have a winter duvet and a summer one and usually wash them at the local laundrette/dry cleaners every 6 months, then vacuum pack the out of season one. I know they're meant to be done 3 monthly but it's just too much hassle. It costs £10 each time. I've just realised that I can buy a new duvet for that price. It's also…

Lamb Stew?
I've forgotten what cut of lamb my Mum used for lamb stew. It was small roundish pieces - probably 3 - 4 inches in diameter with a small bone in the middle. Two or three years ago the butcher who does a round here got me some. Can anyone help with what it's called please. I've looked at pics of best end of neck and scrag…

Getting rid of damp smells on clothes and saving money on washing?
I have gave my washing machine a good clean out recently on a 90 degree wash and cup of vinegar and removed alot of the gunk built up which i thought might be the reason of bad smelling clothes. But clothes still smell a little weird and damp when they come out on 40 and 30 washes (short washes) and as they dry out on…

Filling your freezer - fresh or frozen
Hello. It's been a very long time I'm afraid. I will re-introduce myself elsewhere but I wanted to start with a filling the freezer thread. I am getting back to my OS ways having fallen spectacularly off the wagon. I decided to start with the freezer. I have cooked nearly everything edible out of there. However, I had to…

Hello! I used to use MSE years ago and was really active in this group. At the time my wife and I had a weekly thread we would post on with our meal plans. I was wondering if I could start this up again if there's interest? I'll post mine first :) My weekend is Sunday & Monday so my plan begins Tuesday, but I think if…

Vinegar for chutney
A lot of chutney recipes I've found online list cider or wine vinegar in the ingredients. Would substituting malt vinegar make a great deal of difference to the taste? Alternatively where's a cheaper source of cider and wine vinegar, they seem quite expensive in the shops? Thanks

Online grocery shoppers - do you buy fresh foods online
I usually just buy things like cat food and litter, cleaning products, tins etc online and buy fresh veg, meat and fish in the shops but I would like to buy this stuff online too to save carrying as I live on my own and don't drive. However, I am wary of it not been good quality, have read online reviews about it not being…

Can anyone recommend a removable fly screen?
Hi. I know it's a bit late in the season but we are being plagued with flies and more recently wasps in our house and was wondering if anyone can recommend a fly screen that can be quickly put up when I have the doors open then removed when I want to close them as opposed to permanent having a fly net up iyswim? I used to…

Ideas on what to eat on a SC holiday
I'm very lucky to be going away for a week and I'm looking for easy recipes that I can cook in a very basic kitchenette. There's a microwave, fridge (no freezer) and hob plus pots and pans etc. I'm lactose intolerant and allergic to both dairy and soya so I'm planning on packing my rice milk and buying some cereal for…
