Good budget buys at supermarket?

Is there a thread anywhere with recommended budget buys from supermarkets? When I was last on the site a year or so ago, I remember learning that Asda did a good budget jar of curry sauce and very cheap packets of instant custard. I cannot seem to see a thread about such stuff anywhere - am trying to economise in the run up to Christmas.

You could try Approved Foods (esp if you can club together with others) Birds Custard powder is 4 for £1! But always worth checking current prices/pffers on My Supermarket for brands. Taste tests are a bit subjective - my 'it's OK' could be your 'cringe 'and vice versa!
