Rescuing raw pastry in bakewell slices
I made some cherry bakewell slices today (from a Tesco recipe) and realised I didn't blind bake the pastry part for long enough (although it was longer than the recipe said), also didn't check it before putting on the jam and sponge mixture. Let it cool when the sponge was cooked and drizzled it with water icing. The outer…

Cleaning/Polishing Metal Front Door
Hi all, I want to spruce up my front door as I am selling my house. It's the wrong time of year to paint it really (and I'm not that good at gloss). The outside of the door is metal (my colleague at work has already told me I am wrong!). I think it is a thin plate of metal attached to a wooden door, as the inside is wood.…

Best way to clean up toilet?
Apologies if this has been posted before. I tried doing a search but MSE is playing up for me today and the search just wasn't coming up with anything. We have a toilet that is relatively new (probably less than 3 years old) and it has become really stained recently around the rim and down the back of the bowl where the…

Homemade cordial?
Has anyone made their own cordial? Are they are good? Easy to make? I've been replacing coke with cordial and water, however I can only drink full sugar cordials. I have fibromyalgia, and because of this I can't drink anything with aspartame which is an artificial sweetener used instead of sugar but causes me a great deal…

Staple foods/meals for a fussy 3 year old
My daughter’s nursery have mentioned in their recentnewsletter that “they want to ensure that parents provide a variety of foodsfor their child, to ensure they have a varied and healthy diet”. I completely agree with this sentiment and Isuspect that this is something to do with the quality of food that some parents…

Deep cleaning a grotty house
I'm rather loathed to call anyone in to deep clean our house but it feels embarrassing. To cut a long story short had a baby 3 weeks ago but spent the whole pregnancy in and out of hospital so full cleaning went out the window. DH tried his hardest to keep the basics done but the reality is the house is now disgusting…
