Deep cleaning a grotty house

I'm rather loathed to call anyone in to deep clean our house but it feels embarrassing. To cut a long story short had a baby 3 weeks ago but spent the whole pregnancy in and out of hospital so full cleaning went out the window. DH tried his hardest to keep the basics done but the reality is the house is now disgusting (think grimy skirting boards tiles behind appliances:( )
Any tips for reclaiming my house without feeling the need to resort to getting cleaners in? I have a steamer for some bits n bobs it just feels like such a challenge

Congratulations on the birth of your baby. Try not to tackle too much at once as you are going to be tired looking after a baby. Pick a room and an area in that room and just concentrate on that. Baby wipes are good for cleaning leather sofas!MFW 91 op 2014 £410/1000

Ok this is the time you give up, lol and when friends family, say, ohh is there anything I can do? you hand them a duster/ cleaner and say oh please, it would be lovely if you could clean the floor/ cooker/ bathroom. I am just so tired, and I need to concentrate on baby.
Congratulations and enjoy every moment, x x xtoday's mood is brought to you by coffee, lack of sleep and idiots.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby.
I remember my health visitor telling me that the baby comes first and the housework will always be there, have a nap when the baby naps, just run the hoover over everyday and if anyone visits hand them the baby and get a few bits done or ask them to wash up a few bits, give them a duster etc.
Looking after baby and keeping yourself well is first and foremost!
Babies grow so quickly enjoy them while they are babies, in a blink of an eye they will be at school.Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

You should never use baby wipes on leather unless you want to destroy it. They cause the leather to break down.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Too true. Putting housework above spending time with a baby or young child is madness IMO.
(Ps - run the Hoover over once a day?! I Hoover around once a fortnight!)Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
One room at a time. I'd start in the kitchen then go on tho the lounge next so there's somewhere to sit. Next maybe the bathroom and then the bedroom.
But there's no rush, there's always tomorrow. Things don't have to sparkle.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

If you can get a recommended cleaner have him/her in to do a once-off deep clean throughout the house.
You will feel much better having everything clean and will be able to keep on top of the day-to-day work.0 -
I agree with Mojisola!
If there's anyway you can, get a profressional cleaner in to get everything stright and clean, then go from there and it will be easier to keep on top of everything
You can just hand the keys over and take yourself out for a few hours and come back to a lovely clean enviroment
I know I'd rather do that than ask visitors to help with the real grotty cleaning and you'll feel so much better when it's done
If it's any consolation, my cleaners at work love a good challenge. They say the feeling of satisfaction when everything is sparkling is fab!0 -
Have a look at the Fly Lady thread.
I would say -
1) tackle one room a week (kitchen, bathroom, baby's room, living room)
2) try not to stress about it
3) call in favours/ask for help from nearest and dearest.
4) try not to stress about it
A trick my friend passed on to me - leave the hoover in a corner of the living room. That way, when someone comes to visit they will think you were just about to run the hoover round, so won't judge the state of your carpets. Also - wear lipstick. It makes you look like you're totally in control of your life, so if people notice that the skirting boards are dusty (or whatever) they will think it's just a temporary blip.
I hope your health problems are all sorted now. Most of all enjoy your baby - but I also understand that you will be able to enjoy him/her more if you have somewhere clean to put them down from time to time!!No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -

Have we time-slipped back a century or so? :rotfl:0
