Oven to Table - suitable to oven cook?
Hello, I bought a lovely casserole dish yesterday http://www.portmeirion.co.uk/portmeirion-christmas-wish-covered-veg-dish.html and when I looked at the bottom it says oven to table instead of oven safe. Does anyone know what this means? Can I use it to cook in the oven or is it really just a posh dish to put stuff on the…

How much does a load of washing cost?
Hi, I wash the kit for my husbands football team. How much do you think is a reasonable amount to charge for a load of washing taking into account the electricity, wear and tear on the machine, plus washing powder and fabric conditioner? I also sometimes use my lakeland heated airer to dry it or finish the shorts off in…

Help - Brabantia bin
Just bought a shiny new 40 litre Brabantia touch bin which came with 45 litre bin bags. I know I am being really stupid but I can't work out how to fit the bin bags - they don't seem to be wide enough at the top? What am I doing wrong?

Cleaning bricks!
Hello, I have a brick fireplace with a row of bricks on the ground in front of the hearth, I've tried cleaning them and they look lovely wet but when they dry off they looks just as dusty as before I cleaned them. Is there some way to er, oil them maybe? Something to get them to stay looking clean :)

How can I stop fish repeating on me?
I'm sitting here doing fishy burps and its really annoying me! I love fish, but whenever I eat it I spend the next several hours with it repeating on me. Does this happen to anyone else? Is there anything I can eat or drink to counteract it? :(

Batch cooking - how long will they keep for?
Hi all, I know there's a batch cooking thread with fabulous ideas and recipes, which I would love I try. I am a very cautious cook and not very confident at the safety side of things. I enjoy cooking, my food is usually good, but chicken I ensure is practically cremated, I never freeze anything like meat etc, for fear of…

Is it possible to clean a candle that's older than I am?
I know this is an odd topic, but does anyone know a way to de-yellow old wax? I want to clean a candle that's in the shape of a snowman (a bit like this, but cuter and much older). The snowman's face used to be white/cream, but now it's very definitely yellow. I want to restore him to his former glory, but I'm afraid I'll…

A Singularly Lonely Christmas
Hi All At the risk of bringing the Christmas preparation mood down, I could do with some good, constructive OS advice, please. For reasons too depressing to go into here, I find myself this Christmas with no family, no partner, and my few very good friends too far away, to spend Christmas with. In fact, having lost both my…

Dumplings in slow cooker
I'm new to this board, finally at the age of almost 50 getting in touch with my domestic side and starting to enjoy making meals rather than relying on things other people have made and packaged! We love stews/casseroles and in winter especially I do them a lot, but until recently it was always in the oven. Now I have a…

Induction hob query
We currently have no kitchen. I am cooking with the help of the remoska and microwave and last week I bought a Tefal one burner tabletop induction hob. It is brilliant and means we can have boiled eggs, veg etc etc BUT Theres a manual control where the heat settings go from P1 to P9, I do things like cooking spuds at P3 or…

Christmas Cake - lowest shelf of oven?
Hi, I have just made Delia's Christmas Cake (better late than never!), and the recipe says to cook on lowest shelf of oven. I have a free-standing traditional gas cooker, with a choice of 5 shelf positions. The bottom shelf position is almost right on the floor of the oven, where it is ok to heat up a plate but I never use…

Dried fruit left soaking in brandy
About 6 weeks ago I put some dried fruit to soak in brandy, then made my Christmas cake with most of it. I just went to use the pot (the crockpot from my slow cooker) and found quite a bit still in there. Do you think it's still usable? It looks and smells fine and I could make some mincemeat with it but I don't want to…
