How much does a load of washing cost?

Hi, I wash the kit for my husbands football team. How much do you think is a reasonable amount to charge for a load of washing taking into account the electricity, wear and tear on the machine, plus washing powder and fabric conditioner? I also sometimes use my lakeland heated airer to dry it or finish the shorts off in the tumbler.

I have been charging £2.50 a load but would be interested to know if you think thats about right?

Depends on so many factors, are you on a water meter, how much you pay for your powder and fabric conditioner, how much you use, etc etc. How much is a service wash at your local launderette (if you have one)?
Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

  • Thanks, I know what you are saying and I suppose I could cost it out, but was just looking for a general opinion. We dont have a water meter, I buy decent powder when its on offer and I have to use a reasonable amount to get the very muddy kits clean.

Didnt think of finding out what the launderette charges though so that a good idea.

Our laundrette charges £5 per load, £10 wash & tumble. So id say £2.50 for no profit is reasonable as obviously you dont have business charges/staff costs.

I would think that £2 covers costs. The extra fifty pence is useful if there is also electric used to dry them.

I think you are undercharging, if this is a regular arrangement for you to do it to save them doing it themselves/going to a launderette. You've got to bear in mind the time you spend doing it, the washing powder, the electricity, the drying, the wear and tear on machines.

OH plays football and they take it in turns to do it. It's a pain in the bum. It's a LOT of very manky washing. Why is it always you who does it? I don't think many teams rely on just one person all the time. To me, this turns it from 'doing a favour' or 'taking my turn' into "doing a job for the team every blooming week that would otherwise make work for everyone or cost them quite a lot".

It was his turn last week and he took it down to the launderette - service wash for full football team kit of shorts, socks and tops was £13.50. It's not just one 'load' is it, whether the launderette or you do it. Unless you somehow have a massive industrial washing machine :-)

I know they are making a profit, which you presumably don't want to do, but I would think £5-£8 would be much fairer to you, bearing in mind all the inconvenience as well.
