Christmas Cake - lowest shelf of oven?

Hi,
I have just made Delia's Christmas Cake (better late than never!), and the recipe says to cook on lowest shelf of oven. I have a free-standing traditional gas cooker, with a choice of 5 shelf positions. The bottom shelf position is almost right on the floor of the oven, where it is ok to heat up a plate but I never use it for cooking anything as it's not hot enough. I have put the cake on the shelf setting one up from that (gas no 1) - do you think that is ok?? Thanks for any advice

I would keep it up a bit, as I find my gas cooker does not heat the bottom of my oven at all. compared to my old electric fan oven which heated the entire oven. you might be waiting a good while on the very bottom tier. also I always say the person whos recipe your using might have a great modern high end cooker which is fabulous but we have the ordinary house cookers hthC.R.A.P.R.O.L.L.Z #7 member N.I splinter-group co-ordinater

I'd ask on Delia's forum. She created the problem by not being clear.0

It actually turned out really well! :j On various forums it says that the recommended cooking time is far too long (some people even said that theirs was burned after 2hrs), but mine needed the full 4.5hrs on gas mark 1, on the last but one shelf of a normal free-standing gas oven. I did follow the double lining instructions to the letter. I'm not a great baker, but it looks yummy and the house smells so Christmassy now! Thanks for the advice  x0
