Nigella's Butterscotch Layer Cake
Hello lovely ladies (and gentlepeeps!) A few days ago (on one of the 'Tough threads:o) somebody mentioned Nigella's Butterscotch Layer Cake. I dug out my copy of Domestic Goddess and bought the ingredients. I think I have a disaster - or maybe it's meant to be like this..... I have the two sandwich bases in the oven as we…

stopping bin from marking wall?
We have a Hailo 3-sectioned pedal bin for recycling and normal waste. It is about 60cm high. The back of the hinge for the lid marks the wall it is put against. Does anyone have any suggestions of something to put on this to stop it happening? I have tried keeping it further away from the wall, but it always ends up…

Kowledgeable people: Help!
My old cat has decided that he would rather toot behind the sofa to pass his water rather than go out. Not all the time I may add, but he has done it and I can smell it, no matter what I do to remove it. I've sprayed it, I've scrubbed it with floral disenfectant, and I've spent hours steaming it which I thought would be…

Soup recipes?
I know there's some in the old style recipe thread but I couldn't find anything that I liked the sound of! My normal style of making soup is to boil up some veg until it's crushable, then mash it and add stock. However this time I fancy making something a bit more exotic! Currently in my cupboard I have: - Potatoes - Sweet…

Where to shop?
I am trying to cut back on food shopping. It's not the food that is the issue but the place I shop and how often. I have bipolar disorder and part of that can make me feel really scared to go out alone :( I do a big shop on ASDA once a month online , and in an ideal world I'd stock up on what I've run out of (fruit, veg ,…

Curry leaves
Do any of the major supermarkets sell curry leaves or would I have to go to Brick Lane, London (I am in London but it's not that close)? A friend in France can't get them there so I wondered if I could post her some fresh ones or do they go off fast as post takes a week? Otherwise I suppose the dried ones could be posted,…

4 - 5 year old party food
Am looking for suggestions for a 5 year old's birthday party. There is a kitchen where we are holding it, but its limited in scope. Plus I've got another child under my feet all day so can't spent all my time cooking. The party is in November, so I'm aware that it could be a touch on the cold side so am looking for…

Not mentioning the T word at all
I'm starting this thread as a place for every one offer general old style advice and support when they are feeling at the sharp end of life and all it throws at them. This could be big picture stuff like the economic situation, equally it could be personal hard times of a practical, emotional or financial nature. We have…

Lyod Grossman jar of chilli sauce.
I've been given a couple of these to use up. I have just used one and it's yuck! What can I do to improve it? It's seems to be too sweet and has enough chilli heat not sure what to add to alter this. When we are so used to making our own it makes you wonder what they add to processed food to make it last.

Frosted glass table.
I know if anyone has a solution to this it will be you lot lol. Basically I bought a second hand table with a glass top with 4 opaque squares like a placemat at each seat position. I'm not doing very well discribing it but the opaque squares have greasy finer marks all over them,I have washed with a tooth brush and hot…

Cheapest/most efficient way to cook
Hello all As I'm not turning the heating yet I've realised the myriad other ways I'm [STRIKE]wasting[/STRIKE] using energy. To cook I have gas hob, fan oven and grill, microwave, breadmaker and slow cooker. I am presuming the slow cooker is the most efficient, but for the other stuff does microwave win out over oven? Is…

Biscuits which will last/travel well
Hi all, I'm a bit of a lurker around these parts, and normally find everything I could ever wish by simply observing, but now comes the time for a question! My OH is overseas at the mo and I like to send him stuff to cheer him up (and let him know I'm still functioning!). So far I've sent a couple of batches of Anzac…

Hot drink stain on formica/mdf
We're moving house, we've a few odds and ends to fix up in our rented house here. The LL wrote us such a lovely referall, I really would like to do my best to fix these few things. Despite my nagging and warning DD put a hot drink down on the dresser/wardrobe unit thats built into her bedroom. I'm not exactly sure of the…

Store cupboard basics
Hi All I'm looking for some advice on store cupboard basics. Herbs and spices mainly. I already keep lots of baking ingredients in and the usual rice, pasta etc. What I'm aiming for is to make more meals from scratch without using store bought jars of sauce etc. I would be really grateful if you could tell me what you keep…
