Malt Loaf?
I bought something packaged as malt loaf today but when I went to have a slice its nothing like I expected - I was imagining fruity, sticky and sweet-like good old soreen but this is just dark bread - not like german rye or granary though but no fruit, only slightly sweet but dry. Even though it was yellow stickered I…

Question about sewing with pvc.
A poser from my DD. She is wanting to make wipeable seat covers for her dining chairs (she's got 2 young boys + one on way) for ease of cleaning. She asked me if it was possible to make them with the pvc material you can buy for tablecloths. I said it was, but it got me thinking if I'm right! Can you sew pvc? I'm wondering…

Fruitless Christmas cake challenge!
My friend has tasked me with making a cake, but she hates raisins, sultanas & currants. Cherries are fine, a little bit of mixed peel and will tolerate flaked almonds. As she likes the idea of the cake being fed between now and Christmas, does anyone have any recipes that would suit? I imagine that I can use dates, but…

using newspaper & loo roll inners as firelighters
hi guys now that the colder nights are here I'm glad that I collected the inners from loo and kitchen rolls all summer and rolled them inside each other to make free fire-lighters. (add a small piece of fire-lighter if needed). With kids also collected bags of pine cones as they light the fire really well when dry. also…

Slow cooker vs pressure cooker
Just seen on episode of Masterchef Australia where they used a pressure cooker for [STRIKE]cake and squiddly [/STRIKE] steak and kidney pie. I had forgotten they existed and it got my thinking which was most economic to run, versatile etc out of the two. Any thoughts?

Dinner parties - not anymore
We have some very good friends who over the years have been many times to our house and we have been to theirs, again many times. In our youth we just had them over for drinks and we'd serve up maybe some cheese and biscuits during the evening. Anyway how it happened I don't really know, but over the years this sort of…

Blanket to Duffle Coat?
I've managed to inherit 2 pure wool blankets today - which although lovely are no use on our beds (duvets and quilts or microfibre blankets) So I was thinking - what I REALLY need is a warm winter coat for DS2 who is three years old. If I hot wash these blankets to shrink/felt them and run a dye through them - I have 2…

Cooking Russian Food
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. My dd is having a Russian day at school next week and each child has been asked to bring in food for it. I've no idea where to start :o It needs to be something that can be eaten cold and something the children might like to try.Oh and cheap to make, money is tight.…

Washing Up Bowl Stand
I have a plastic thingy which I put underneath my washing up bowl. It lifts the bowl about six inches or so, has a nice rim to stop the bowl slipping and as it is plastic it doesn't stain the sink. It is lovely and sturdy (or has been) as I like to wash up with a full bowl of water, and it has seen years of use. It is…
