Just seen on episode of Masterchef Australia where they used a pressure cooker for [STRIKE]cake and squiddly [/STRIKE] steak and kidney pie.
I had forgotten they existed and it got my thinking which was most economic to run, versatile etc out of the two.
Any thoughts?

Horses for courses. I can't stand slow cookers (everything seems to taste the same out of them, and as a vegetarian I don't want to eat vegetables that have been cooking all day), whereas you'll have to prise my pressure cooker out of my cold, dead hands!
It cooks pulses so rapidly, and you don't need to do all the prep in the morning. Also saves a fortune in gas! And the stock you make in pressure cookers is sublime.0 -
They really are quite different beasts.
I have both and use each of them in completely different ways and circumstances to cook different meals and wouldn't like to replace either with the other.

pressure cooker all the way
apart from soup, everything made in a slow cooker tastes like institution food or ready meals _pale_ & don't get me started on the slimy, squishy, smelly vileness that is SC'd chicken
I gave my slow cooker away ... to my Ex husband:rotfl:

I have both, but find the pressure cookery the most valuable and most used... it cooks the meat so much better. I only use my SC for brisket, and curry....!
I wouldn't be with a PC, but could easily live without my SC.We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
Guys,
the crock pot for my slow cooker cracked last night (not done bad really 15 years old)
So OH has kindly offered to replace for my chrimbo pressie, so my question is should i go for another slow cooker or a pressure cooker?
We tend to cook lots of stews and joints of meat ( gammon mainly) in our current one and i find it really useful, i just wondered if a pressure cooker would be more versatile?

I am firmly in the pressure cooker camp, having recently rescued mine from the loft. I do have a slowcooker too, but I prefer the flavour of food coming out of the pressure cooker. Somehow the food from the slow cooker has a bit of an odd flavour.
I use the PC to make soups and stews (oxtail comes out fab after 45 mins),cook veg like beetroot, steam puddings and bacon joints.I have also cooked a whole chicken, which comes out lovely and moist. and the saucepan can be used as a normal saucepan as well.
I think the think I really prefer about the PC is that I don't have to wait for the food, I'm not so good a planning ahead, and I like the fact that I can make a really good well flavoured and rich stew in about an hour, or a lovely lentil soup in 15 mins.Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
Pressure cooker! You can do all the same things as a slowcooker... plus a lot more!
I use my pressure cooker ALL the time... the slow cooker comes out once in a blue moon! And the slow cooker doesn't make the tough cuts half as tender as the pressure cooker does!
The slow cooker does make everything the same taste and texture... while the pressure cooker makes the taste and texture so much nicer, and the food will even thicken (unlike the SC).
I also do dried beans in mine (and freeze them) which saves a fortune! We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy! Mortgage Free Wannabe :dance:Overpayments Made: £5400 - Interest Saved: £11,550 - Months Saved: 240 -
Erm, can I suggest both? I have both because I work nights so when I get out of bed in the afternoon, it's nice to know that tea is ready for when everyone gets home from school. This evening, I'm using the PC for stew but I'm working tonight so will be using the SC for tomorrows Oxtail stew. That way, I can just bung it all in when I get home in the morning and let it sort itself out.Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0

PRESSURE COOKER! We must have saved a fortune in gas costs and also in the cost of beans - we're mainly a vegetarian household. Also, I do gammon in the PC for MrS's sandwiches, it works like a charm, only 8mins per lb.0
