batch cooking and freezer space
Hi, I'm currently re-designing my kitchen as the old one is falling apart. At the moment I've got seperate fridge and freezer and I was looking at getting a tall freezer to store all my batch cooked meals and bread in - however I think I'm going to have to get a fridge-freezer to make room for cupboards (kitchen's only…

quick cake making question
I am making some cakes for the freezer as i have eggs to use up. I was going to make normal fairy cakes - but noticed that I have two apples past their best and wondered if i could add them into the mix. So, was thinking apple and cinamon (also have sultanas that I could add as well). My question is whether I can just add…

How to tell if fruit is fresh
Apologies if this is blindingly obvious to most of you, but if I am in the supermarket, how can I tell which items of fruit are the best ones to chose? I'm fine with apples, bananas etc, but for oranges, pears, kiwi fruit, grapefruits etc, should it be the firm ones or the soft ones that I select? Many thanks.

Cornish Kobe Chuck Steak- Any Recipes??
Hi, we have been given some cornish kobe beef and I am not sure of what to do with it! As a veggie myself I struggle with what to do with meat apart from with a load of veg, wine and stock for hours in my oven. As this is special beef I would like to do this justice. Is chuck steak only for slow cooking? Also am…

Storing olives, capers etc once opened
Yet again this morning I've had to throw out an almost full jar of black olives that I only opened a week or two ago to use in a greek salad. I put the jar in the fridge after I opened it and wanted to use some today in a moroccan tagine dish but they've gone off already  :( This is always happening to me with things…

What useful OS equipment do you have?
Hello everyone! A quick question... Am working hard in my quest to be OS. Doing little bits here and there and feeling very positive about it :) In my OS quest, can people recommend any useful 'stuff' that will help? For example, I have a breadmaker already, and am thinking of buying a slow cooker. Though not just…

DD3's school is old style!
Just been chatting with dd3 whilst putting her to bed and she has told me that when they get stung they have vinegar put on them! I can remember my mum running me up the road to a neighbour after I got stung by a bee when I was about dd3's age, 7, totally naked as I'd been in the paddling pool and she'd whipped my swimmers…

'Savoury pancakes' to stuff
Hello! I want to make stuffed pancakes, as I have spinach and ricotta in the fridge and thought they'd be nice baked with a bechemal and tomato sauce. Nigella has a recipe, but she's used (of course!) PRE-MADE savoury pancakes. I was intending on making up a batch of normal pancakes tonight and using them for tomorrows…

Healthy eating - oils and sugars
Me again!! Another question I wanted to pick your OS brains about! I'm doing a lot more cooking from scratch now, which means I'm aware when I'm using oils, fats and sugars in my cooking and baking, I think I'm eating a lot healthier generally as a result. Are there any oils or fats that are healthier to use than others,…

Storing flours
I'm having a bit of a cupboard sort-out, can I just ask how do people store their flours??? I'm now keeping most of my dry staples (grains/different types of rice/pasta, dried pulses, nuts, seeds) in labelled glass kilner-type jars, and I have to say it makes the sad little 'desperate housewife' in me very happy when I…

Cleaning Beige Seatbelts and leather
I think this belongs in OS rather than motoring. I’ve recently acquired a car with a beige (not as bad as it sounds) interior. Its not in bad nick but the seatbelts are decidedly dirty/grubby. I’d appreciate some advice on how to clean them without harming them. Also, the beige leather has some creases that are a little…
