Is plant growing on roof a problem?
I was looking at a house. It is a 100 year old building, but has been refurbished on the inside. On the tiled (maybe slate) roof, where it joins a vertical bit of brick at the edge of the building, a plant is growing. I forgot to take a picture. But it has a stem a couple of foot long with leaves growing out of the side of…

Condensing tumble dryer
Hope someone can help please. I have just taken delivery of a new candy grand o vita condensing tumble dryer and turned it on for the first time. I thought the whole point of a condensing one is so you didn't need a vent and to avoid steamed up windows. I'm now having to open my windows which are dripping in water. I have…

Moving a water butt
Hiya Hopefully I'm moving house in the not too distant future, and I'm taking my large garden water butt with me. It's currently taking its water from a plastic squared off downpipe and my question is, when I pull the house out there's just going to be an open hole that will be ready for the buyers to attach their water…

Narrow porch, walls getting scuffed by bags etc
So we have just had our lounge decorated. It looks amazing am very pleased. As part of it we had our porch decorated (wall paper stripped, artex removed, painted off white) it's a really small space - approx 1m X 1.5m (useless space apart from keeping the draft out) We didn't really think about what we wanted to do with…

Police Forcing Entry - What do I do?
Hello, The police recently forced entry into my nan's house, and arranged for the locks to be replaced. It took 4 hours from the 999 call to finally force entry, and unfortunately my Nan passed away not long afterwards. As if this wasn't hard enough to cope with, we've had an invoice addressed to my Nan for £204 to cover…

How to approach removal of wood flooring
We recently took ownership of a new home (fifty years old; not a new build), which has oak flooring in the living room (fitted in the last six years, in case that's relevant). Next year we plan to remove the chimney breast and would like to replace the wooden flooring with carpet at the same time. Can anybody advise how…

Radiator replacement cost
Hello, I have been quoted £500 + VAT to replace 7 like to like (or nearly like) radiators. I was expecting this around £350-£400 + VAT so this is slightly higher than what I expected but I'm pretty sure someone in this forum would have some recent experience for similar job and can share what they paid or whether this is a…

Mushroom in ensuite
I found a mushroom behind the toilet in the ensuite today, the shower is very close to the toilet and I'm aware it has a leak. Who do I call? I'm guessing this could be expensive and not sure if it's covered by house insurance.

Building over a foul sewer
Hello. I'm considering a house purchase (which we would only want, if we could extend it). Received the following plans back from water company: My image shows: - Larger black outline (current property) - Adjacent black squares (current double garage) - Green outline (proposed rebuild/extension etc) - Red line (foul sewer)…

Kitchen wall border tiles
Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me find some border wall tiles for our new kitchen. We're having white Metro tiles on the wall (original, I know!) and we'd like to have the border tiles which have a raised, ornate, Victorian look. I'm not sure exactly what it's called, which is why it's been hard for me to search for…

Where can I hire/borrow a low-E coating detector?
Does anyone know where I can hire/borrow a low emissivity coating detector (or low-E coating detector, or Pilkington K-glass detector), which is used to check that a double glazing window unit has been manufactured and installed correctly? I know that I can buy one for about £40 - £60. And I suspect that the like of…

Anyway so we have one large desk which 4 people can fit around, its basically just one large table. I'd like to try and creating a standing desk in the same…

Under Counter Freezer
It is making a running water noise, a bit like a drinking fountain. No water to be seen though and no leaking water, so it is internal to the freezer. Do you think it is on it's last legs? I have not noticed this noise before now though.....it was defrosted around 3 months ago and no ice build up so far. Thanks

Glasses Frame Repair (metal)
I am fairly certain my glasses frame is metal. The arm has snapped off the frame. I have tried three times to glue the arm back onto the frame with Evostik epoxy 2 part adhesive (says suitable for metal and plastic) but its not staying stuck. I've sanded the glue off, cleaned with Isopropranol (white spirits), glued again…
