Do you use a standing desk?

Options
Hi this is actually a consideration for work, I have back and posture problems and am in pain quite often, sitting for extended periods makes it progressively worse.

Anyway so we have one large desk which 4 people can fit around, its basically just one large table. I'd like to try and creating a standing desk in the same position, so I would imagine my only option is to add something on top, e.g. another table

I cant seem to find many desk riser options, that dont cost a fortune, if my work dont agree to pay for it which is highly likely I'd pay for it myself so i dont want to spend a stupid amount

I need to be able to fit TWO monitors on it, plus keyboard and mouse

Has anyone had similar experience?

  • Have you tried your occ health or Heath and safety at work? Access to work maybe able to help.

Yes, I have had to stand up while working for a few years now for the same reason as you.

I am working at the moment so have to be brief so I will reply to any questions you have later.

I use a few box files and books to raise my mouse pad (I have my mouse pad directly in front of me and not to the side) and balance my keyboard between the edge of the top box file and the top of the monitor stand that my lap top is on. I have a flat screen monitor on the wall.

If you google "tall monitor stands" I am sure you will be able to find one which will hold 2 monitors at the right height for you.
  • Depends on how much you want to pay; anything decent isn't going to be cheap.

The Varidesk works quite well and has a decent range of adjustment; it sits on a desk without the need for permanent fixing so doesn't damage the desk, it's also movable so can move around the office with you if you need to. If you have medical needs then you may find that your company has no choice but to adapt your workspace. Access to Work may fund these for small employers or get a discounted option for larger employers making them more affordable.

  • Obviously depends on your individual circumstances, but some people replace their chair with a pilates ball to improve posture. (I'm a convert.)

I have considered a standing desk, but I find it quite uncomfortable to stand for long periods, so haven't tried it yet.

Sent an email to access to work, finally got round to it!

Hopefully they'll be able to help
  • I used a standing desk at work up until I got pregnant and it became too tiring to stand all day.

Work wouldn't pay for a standing desk. They argued that if I left, the next person may not want to stand, which is fair enough. So I bought a coffee table from Habitat (http://www.habitat.co.uk/kilo-grey-metal-coffee-table-236077) and put it on top of my desk. Worked beautifully. And when I wanted to switch back to sitting, I gave it to a colleague, who is now using it to stand at his desk.

good ideas, though I would like the ability to go from standing to sitting when I'd like
standing all day is bad, and so is sitting all day

so really need one with the levers that will move up and down as needed
