Chesney stoves

Options
Hello all,
Just wondered if anyone had experiences of Chesney wood burning stoves? We are about the get one installed, the survey has been done and now we just need to select the stove!
Chesney has been highly recommended by the dealer, it seems to be the one that goes best aestetically speaking with the fire surround and apparently is a very good stove - it also happens to be the most expensive.
However, I've read some not-so-good reviews on-line and I wonder if we are about to make a mistake and should go for another make/model instead.

Are you looking at a coloured (enamelled) Chesney? If so there are lots of reports of the enamel discolouring & even flaking off after as little as a few months of use.

Have a look at Morso, Aga & Clearview. Morso & Aga are totally cast iron which, IMO, is the best material for a stove but you lose the colour options.

IMO, they are not worth it. They are promoting themselves as being design led and spending a fortune on advertising in the likes of house beautiful, home and gardens etc. IMO it is all spin and no substance.

You could get something a lot better for less money, which will last you a lot longer. Have heard their after sales is abysmal, dealers have told me nothing is ever their fault.

Try and keep away from coloured stoves, you are opening yourself up to a world of pain, unless you look after them with kid gloves. They can easily chip and repainting them is not an easy thing to do.

thanks for the replies. We are not actually looking for a coloured stove, just plain black. The reason why we are thinking of going for Chesney (Beaumont 5kw) is that looks wise, it seems to match the existing fire surround the best.

To be honest investing a lot of money into something that just "looks right" isn't the wisest move IMO.

When you're spending a grand plus you need to know that it's going to last & from what I know Chesney stoves don't compare to the stoves I suggested above.... it's your money though!

Sorry to jump in but I'm being given a Morso squirrel which apparently may need repainting. I assumed it would be fairly easy to sand down and repaint. Is that not the case?

The squirrel is normally cast black isnt it?

If it is black, then all you would really need to do is use a med-fine wire wool on it, to get rid of any rust/debris. You could then just use something like Zebo rubbed in to give it a lustre. If you stove paint it, then use a matt finish, then zebo over it.

If it is an enamel stove, you have to take into account that all cast iron stoves will be black underneath. The enamel paint is sprayed on then it should be cured to harden. You will find that over a period of time, through use you will end up with chips and dinks on it. The enamel will come off in bigger pieces, so will look awful.

I would always go for a Black stove, they are easier, cosmetically to look after and cheaper to buy.

Cheers, I think its a sort of greyish colour. Haven't actually seen it yet though! Am getting it for free so I'm not complaining if the paint isn't in great condition.

Morso stoves are a dark grey colour, not black. If it needs repainting rub it down with wire wool & apply Morso senotherm paint.
