Vibrating TRV's

Hoping that there is someone that has had experience of this issue. Just had a new combi boiler installed (Worcester Bosch Greenstar star 29cdi Classic). Three bedroom house with 11 radiators.

After a while once boiler is up to temp, usually two radiators in the upstairs rooms start to make an awful noise. New trv have been added to all of the rads at installation of the new boiler. Engineer that carried out the installation advises that the something in the trv vibrates and causes the noise when water it pushed through them too quickly or something to that affect. Only way to stop the noise is it turn down or turn off the trvs. Engineer has been round to adjust the rads twice so far but that has has limited effect. Engineers theory is the new boiler has a larger pump inside which is driving the water through the rads quick than the older boiler. Anyone has a similar issue and was there a way to resolve?

I'm going to get the engineer back round but I'd thought I'd get independent advice on a money saving forum :)

Oh yes, TRV's are apparently bi-directional and my engineer tried adjusting the lockshields on the other side of the rad which he thought would solve the issue.

One thing to check - some bidirectional TRVs need their flow direction setting, might be worth checking the instructions to see if this is required and is correctly set.
  • What make of trv's are they & did he fit an auto bypass when he fitted the new boiler ?
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Not sure of the make. Are there poor quality TRV's that are prone to this issue? I'll see if I can find out about about the auto-bypass. Where is this fitted by the way?
  • Bi-directional TRV's are supposed to be ok on flow or return. The problem is the cheaper TRV's have a tendency to suffer from water hammer. I've been told its the spring in the valve is of a poorer quality material and doesn't arrest the valve jumping.
Of course there is always the other option mentioned above that the TRV is a dearer version which needs the little ring setting correctly?
