How to wire an outdoor light
Hi, I have moved into my new home. There was an outdoor lantern but I have never managed to get it work. I think the light might be broken and I decided to a new one. However, I am unable to identify which of the wires is live, nature and earth. I also used a voltage tester but only on a few occasions I could see very weak…

The rain hitting the window sill is really loud! I think it could mainly due to the drops from the window above? either way I need to do something about it. I've noticed the window above has a plastic strip at the top and bottom of the window but this one only as the plastic sill, is that the cause of the problem? should…

Baxi Bermuda 401 Back Boiler Problem
I'm having a problem (I think) with a BB 401 Back Boiler; the system is fully pumped with cylinder/tank & room stats and a 3-way valve. A faulty boiler pilot light thermocouple has just been replaced and all appeared well; however I'm recently finding that, when the room (or tank?) stat is calling for heat the boiler will…

Getting planning permission for several phases at once?
Hi, planning a 7x4m 2 story rear extension. Not sure we have the monies for the whole project in one go. Is it possible to get pp for the whole thing but only get downstairs done first? That would leave us to do the second floor another day. Would an architect be able to do both in one go with structural calcs etc. then we…

new security light wiring
Just bought a PIR light from screwfix, and on taking the back off to wire it up, I find that there is a red, yellow/green, blue and a dark brown. I have a wire to plug into the mains with only 3 wires, so what do i do? The red seems to go back into the light fitting on the other side of the block.

Broken Vax vacuum cleaner
Hi All, I think I broke my two year old Vax cylinder vacuum cleaner. It started sputtering on Christmas Day and smoking and blowing out. Now it doesn't work. I took the top layer apart and suspect that I didn't have the main vent correctly in position so that stuff went into the motor area. I've not ventured to unscrew to…

Unable to source plaster ceiling rose to match existing
Hello, Title is fairly self-explanatory. After initially searching the sheds and then the internet to try to find ceiling roses to match the one in our 1900 house we approached 5 local plaster mouldings specialists, sending them a photo. The first sniffly told us it was made by Artex and sold in B&Q. After a very helpful…

Where to get correct sized hinges for my fridge door?
Hi Folks The hinges on my fridge door need replacing. I contacted the supplier who said they will cost £62 each, although the entire in built fridge cost me less than £200 ! Surely, there must be other places where I could get them cheaper? However, when I have looked online, the website usually shows the dimensions of the…

New windows - cheaper in winter?
We've come to the realisation that we have more windows with problems than ones that work. We can put the work off a while but is there any truth to my vague idea/hope that the window companies might be looking for work in the winter and that it therefore might be cheaper to get done it now than in the summer?

Blocked Smeg Washing Machine
Hi I've blocked my Smeg washing machine, after doing something stupid. I put an item in the washing machine, that shouldn't have been washed, it disintegrated, and the fibres have blocked it. I'm getting an error code 06 - cannot drain. Is there anyway I can sort this myself, or is it a plumber job?] Thanks PennyPincher3562

Hi I would love to have a wood burner stove fitted in my lounge. I don't have a chimney so would have to have external flue fitted, its a 2 storey house. The room is 4.8 by 5m so would need 4 kW output. Can anyone advise me how much installation is likely to cost? & any advice on which stove to look for would be great.
