Four poster beds

hi all!
hope you've had a great christmas!

we've just moved a victorian house and have some cash to spare so were thinking about getting a carved poster bed -- anyone have one? if so, what are your thoughts on this vs a normal bed? pros/cons?

they're pretty expensive and i dont want to get one which ends up kitsch rather than authentic... (or maybe i'll just get a normal bed frame)

thanks :)

I have a modern four poster so can only really advise on the practicalities rather than the aesthetics.

The top rails come in really handy when you're getting dressed, I often hang my outfits up there when I'm choosing what to wear.

They also come in really handy when you want to air the duvet.

It looks lovely and romantic when made up with pure white sheets and white muslin curtains, although I do take them down for a change sometimes.

It also has a certain amount of benefit during bedroom athletics, but I'll leave that to your imagiantion ;)

I agree with peachyprice they can look really good if they are kept neat and tidy.Nothing worse than seeing messy looking curtains/drapes especially if they are covered in dust ,which is the main downside imo.

I've made a few for clients , not carved ones but modern looking Oak and walnut ones. You do need to have a decent sized room to take a 4 poster , when you see one in a small room they look very odd and don't skimp on the quality of the matress..

I would also suggest buying good quality sash cord/rope and not the cheap nylon stuff that chafes your wrists and ankles..... Or you could go down the leather straps route..;)

    I'm digressing too much... :D
