Hi all,
My fianc! and I are looking to get our very old metal framed windows replaced with new upvc windows. This is our first house so I was wondering if I can have am advise.
We have 8 windows, a patio door, back and possibly front door to be replaced. Can anyone recommend any reputable people/companies. I have heard so many horror stories of people being ripped off and impossible hard sell salesman that refuse to leave I am feeling very daunted by the situation.
If anyone also has any clue to a rough idea of what kind of figure we should be looking at it would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Laura

Its a few years since we bought windows so I can't give you any steer on prices I'm afraid.
In general big companies with big marketing budgets have to pay for that marketing from somewhere - and it can only come from what you've paid them in higher than necessary prices. Similarly if they were any good they wouldn't need to spend a fortune on irritating TV ads - they'd get business by word of mouth etc. So I'd have a look around for local suppliers, and then check their work. They should be happy to quote you and leave you time to research and consider their prices.
Anyone who tries the "I'm going to phone my manager to get you a better price" or you have to sign up tonight to get this price tricks needs steering firmly and with as little courtesy as necessary to your existing door, at which point put said door between you and them in a closed position. Be warned that if you invite them into your house then the cold calling regs don't apply - this is why they send people around to set up appointments - by agreeing to a later appointment it is no longer a cold call and some of the protection is lost.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
small local company, fensa registered0

All good advice above.
Always get quotes from 3 local Fensa companies.
You will notice a major difference.
Good luck with it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Try Windowworld. Upfront prices and no pushy selling. We were very happy with our installation and price. Front door and 9 windows at just under £2,400.0

What we did was find a local manufacturer & call them, they had fitters that fitted the windows/doors for a fixed fee on top of the manufacturers price, also fensa registered0

It's worth getting manufacturers to price up the windows as supply only then sort out installation separately so that you've got some transparency on pricing.
Be clear about the spec of the windows you want and the U value for the whole window (i.e. not glass centre pane values). The lower the U value the less heat escapes through them. Do plenty of research on DIY forums.0
