Changing from Gas to Electric cooker
I have a gas cooker at the moment and want to convert to dual fuel but need to have the electric connection installed as I don't have the switch. Not sure if this is worth it or if I should just stick with gas only... Any advice/thoughts? Thanks

How to approach a house renovation project?
We are thinking to renovate the house we currently live in. Basically we do not like the downstairs layout and would like to change it by knocking down some walls, probably extending the front of the house a bit, integrating the garage and potentially doing a loft conversion. We have a good idea what we want but we are not…

belated FENSA Certificate
Hi, I'm in the process of selling my home and the buyers solicitor has requested a FENSA cert. We had new windows installed late last year but no certificate was ever issued. I have now contacted the builder who assures me 100% that he will get the FENSA certificate sent to me. I'm a little concerned as there is no record…

Levelling an area for a shed
My garden is roughly 40 x 15 ft and at the end I am having a shed put up. I need to level the ground and ive dug up the grass and levelled as best I can so far. Now, do I make my levelled area level as in all paving slabs are level or do I follow the slight incline of the garden? And,what do I use to level, what is…

Does it take awhile to get used to a new mattress?
I just bought a new pocket spring mattress and have been sleeping on it since Thursday. To be honest, I'm feeling underwhelmed. I haven't been able to sleep solidly throughout the night. I can no longer sleep on my side, so I sleep on my back. However, I find that uncomfortable if I maintain that position too long, so I…

Beer bottles
Not sure whether to post here or on old fashioned money saving? Please move if necessary I brew beer at home. I have a lot of 2 litre brown beer bottles. I believe they originally held cider. They have screw tops, but not like lemonade or other soft drink bottles. The tops actually have a screw down shape. They also have a…

Cost of new fireplace?
Hi, I've just bought a new house, and need to renovate it. The fireplace is hideous! (it's real, not gas). Any idea how much it would cost to rip it out and get a new one installed? There isn't really a surround right now - it's just a square tiled box. Apparently the chimney is fine. Thanks!

Cooker tripping power
All my power went off earlier. Switched it back on at the fuse board but the cooker switch stayed down. If I try resetting it, all the power is tripped again. The cooker is a built in electric oven with gas hob and this happened when the cooker was switched off! Could it be something to do with yesterday when I spilled a…

Kitchen layout
Hi all, just moved into my house and I hate my kitchen. The kitchen is at the side of the house and has a back door and a window that has no opening. The light isn't even central to the kitchen. Therefore the kitchen is so dark. Beyond the kitchen is a L shaped living room and dining room. If I knock through I will gain…

Repainting furniture
My friend is looking for some nursery furniture, but would like it painted in the same shades as the walls. She's thinking of getting items like a crib off freegle or ebay and paying to have them repainted in the colours she wants. Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost? To me it sounds a real faff and might…

Does a driveway add value?
Currently pondering this and wondering what others think. 1970s ex council terraced property. Room for two car driveway to front, currently grassed with 5ft hedge and small retaining wall. Location is a quietish culdesac, with on street parking. We don't normally have a problem getting parking so it's not a huge point of…

uPVC door - door closer
I have a uPVC door in my kitchen. I would love to have some mechanism by which the door will close automatically by some kind of spring action after opening - rather than being shut manually. The nomal door closers available seem to be for wooden doors. My door opens outwards - if that would be of any help. Thanx

Weird electrical problem
Just after a little electrical advice please. When my bedside lamp and radio alarm clock are plugged into a double wall socket (one each, no power strip) the radio doesn't work when the lamp is switched on. It's most peculiar indeed. All things work together if I move the radio to the other side of the bed, however I don't…

Electric regs and kitchen mods.
We are planning stage of a kitchen refit and if we include certain things it will require moving some electrics in our kitchen, sockets and DP switches. Are there any regs that would require us to update anything else. eg. we have a 20yo consumer unit(cart fuses) split load 6+2(with space). We probably should upgrade this…

measuring carpet?
anyone explain how to correctly measure carpet. Need new carpet for a small flat, going to have the same carpet throughout the flat, research on this topic on google seems to say you measure each room, times the length x width, then add all 3 rooms together add 10% and that's how much you need? is that right? doesn't that…
