Does it take awhile to get used to a new mattress?

Options
I just bought a new pocket spring mattress and have been sleeping on it since Thursday. To be honest, I'm feeling underwhelmed. I haven't been able to sleep solidly throughout the night. I can no longer sleep on my side, so I sleep on my back. However, I find that uncomfortable if I maintain that position too long, so I toss and turn. I'm waking up with mid-to-upper back pain now. When I tried this particular model in the store, my gut instinct was that the firm version was more comfortable, while my husband preferred the medium. We went with the medium in the end after convincing from the sales person, information online saying that 'firm isn't always best', as well as the fact that I'm not a heavy person.

I'm a bit annoyed now after spending so much time researching and spending all this money. How much time is enough to judge a mattress? 5 minutes in a store definitely isn't enough. I would have thought a weekend should be enough...after all, I've gotten used to guest beds and hotel beds much faster.

In short yes it does, just like driving a new car or breaking in a new pair of shoes.

The experts say it can take up to 4 weeks to get used to a new bed. Especially if coming from an old unsupported bed to one that now offers correct support.

Deterioration of your old mattress was slow, very slow. But the jump to a new mattress is massive and yes it can take time.

We have more complaints in our store within a week of the product being delivered then at any other time. Again down to the user not being used to the product.

Give it time and hopefully you'll be sleeping soundly soon.

  • Yes it does - we had one last year and I HATED it when it turned up. Despite ''trying it out'' in the bed shop

Now, it is a pit of lushiousness. so comfy

No. My new mattress was wonderful from the very first moment. When it wears out I will buy the same one again.

No, our pocket sprung medium-firm mattress, which wasn't cheap, leaves me feeling too uncomfortable to stay in bed the whole night. That's why I'm here now! :rotfl:It starts off OK, but back pain wakes me after about 3 - 4 hours.

I shall soon go back to the sofa, which isn't great, but at least I sleep on it until the alarm goes off.

On the other hand, my wife is perfectly happy with this bed, and as she's supposedly the one with the bad back.....:(

My daughter got a firm mattress which she didn't like. In theory they had a replacement service, but when she tried to change it after a week she was told she would have to wait longer than that. In the end I bought a good quality mattress topper so now it feels a lot softer but still has the underlying firm support.
