measuring carpet?

anyone explain how to correctly measure carpet.
Need new carpet for a small flat, going to have the same carpet throughout the flat, research on this topic on google seems to say you measure each room, times the length x width, then add all 3 rooms together add 10% and that's how much you need? is that right? doesn't that method mean you may have to have seams in some rooms?

Not heard about the 10% thing? But yes, measure each room length by width. Carpets come in various widths so joins can be avoided. Some sites will calculate for you if you put in your measurements. We recently ordered online and our fitter came and measured for us just to be sure we had it right.0

Where ever you buy, get them to measure, get them to visit.
Thats the problem of trying to save money and buying on line.
You could arrange your carpet fitter first and take his advice.
You have mentioned three rooms.. what about the hall way ?0 -

Sorry yeah a hallway too, that's what's confusing, if I add up all 3 rooms plus hallway, and order say 40m2, that might not leave a whole piece to do the hallway or small bedroom without putting a join in?
Thing is it's a HA flat so they are paying for half the carpets, which turn out to be cheap stuff, I have to pay for the hall and a bedroom, which comes to about 15m2, don't really want to pay for more of the cheap stuff as I got the same people to quote me for it, it's £3.99m2 and they have quoted me £140 which seems a little steep to me, would rather put that money towards decent carpet but trying to pin down a cost is not easy...anyone give me a rough idea of cost for 15m2 of decent carpet fitted, seems 80-20gets mentioned a lot, is that the one to go for?
I don't really want to walk into my local shop and be embarrassed if the price is way out of my league.0 -
This post may come across as being a little rude, but I am trying to help .
Never had a small flat. How much usable floor space are we talking about .
i.e how much of the carpet is hiding under beds/sofa's/ tables.£3.99m2 and they have quoted me £140 which seems a little steep to me,
That really is at the very lower end of the market.
Have you thought , go for the cheap stuff, most of it you will never stand on . Then buy a couple of really nice rugs.0 -
Carpet shops are entirely open to browsing and asking questions. No-one will take a second look if you want to walk away to think about whether to spend £5 or £50 per square metre.
I would question having the exact same carpet throughout. For the trivial difference in price it is not really worth the losing a (even in small flat) small variety between rooms. You could even have different textures (slightly). The fitters will fit thingies between and to join thingies if needed.
If you like the flat and location and don't have babies crawling the floors I would wait a month or two (to suss out neighbours) and then, if flat seems fine, choose decent flooring yourself. If the HA are only offering £4 a sq m carpet I wouldn't fuss about rejecting their offer and choosing your own.0 -
not rude at all.
yeah good point, I guess the bedrooms won't have that much, in fact here are my measurements
LR= 17-10
Bed 1=13.5-8.5
Bed 2 =10-11
and the hallway is about 8-6 (forgot to measure that.)
The quote I got is cheap but for £3.99 carpet, he's charging me about £80 for fitting and underlay, for the hall and small bedroom, when he's fitting the other rooms anyway, seems a bit steep.
Just trying to workout what I can afford before I waste the time of a salesman in the shop, the extras seem to add up...would consider fitting myself too.0 -
the underlay unortunatly adds to the cost and can be as much as much as the cheapest carpet......
Would you not want different carpet in the bedrooms than the living room and the hall, xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -

I was going to ask the HA if they would pay towards my choice instead of paying for the £3.99stuff, even if theygave me £150 it's £150 towards decent carpet...doubt they would tho, so my 2nd option was to lay decent stuff in the parts the HA are not covering, as i really don't want to pay for bad carpet, it seems such a waste of money.
Good point about the neighbours, I guess I'm back to the £3.99 option again then0 -

yeah learning, the price soon jumps up, first time buying carpet, or decorating.
With it being a small flat, and all rooms open into the same hall, I was thinking it would look better having the same throughout?0 -

In an Ideal world you would have a harder wearing carpet in the hall, but at this price? Not an interior specialist, but perhaps using the same carpet would make the place look bigger.
£80 for a small bedroom , and hall , even if he is already there is a fair price.not rude at all.0
