What thickness of insulation?
I'm in a 1920's house which has a two layers of 4½" bricks upstairs with no cavity inbetween. I intend to line the inside of the outer walls with Celotex/Kingspan insulation. What thickness do you reckon? 2 or 3 inches maybe.

Japanese Knotweed
I'm trying to get my little yard turned into something like a garden. The yards around it are badly fly tipped and the gardener won't touch mine until the fly tipped rubbish is removed. In an effort to get the work underway, I've tried to get quotes from land clearance specialists. The only quote I had was for... get…

Moving a fitted wardrobe to another wall - what's approx. cost?
We have a fitted wardrobe (along the whole length of one wall, i.e. wall to wall). This was already installed in a bedroom, on one wall, before I moved in. Meaning I had nothing to do in the design/layout process of the room! ,-( The problem is: access to the wardrobe is blocked by having to walk around the bed! This is…

Cutting shower panels to fit round window
Hi, does anyone have any advice on cutting shower panels (such as http://www.splashpanel.co.uk/) to fit round a window? The window has a wooden lining or reveal that protrudes by 20 mm from the studwork of the wall on all sides and is 1010 x 1230 mm in dimensions. Do I need to cut a rectangular cutout from two panels and…

How much it's likely to cost to extend this kitchen?
This is my kitchen. I want to extend it (where the bin is) about 1 meter. How much the kitchen worktop and cupboard likely to cost for the one meter extension? I don't want to contact a company for a quote just yet as just want to have an idea of the budget. Alternatively I can buy a kitchen island instead. Also if anyone…

Radiator replace or relocate?
The house I am looking to buy has 2 bay windows with curved radiators directly in front. The radiators are about 15+ years old and have no thermostatic valves. From past experience of living in a house with a bay window it was always hard to place a curtain behind the radiator to stop losing heat at winter time. I was…

Storage heater vs. panel heater for bedroom
Hi, When we bought our flat 18 months ago we has a small old storage heater in the bedroom. We used it over winter and all was ok. This summer I took it out because I had new carpet laid and I completely redecorated the bedroom. I hadn't put it back in because I wanted a new white storage heater (the old one was brown!)…

Any ideas on the "wall" part of a sliding wall?
Hello, looking to put in a sliding wall. Would be about 2100 high and maybe 2250 wide. We've found a track system that we're happy to use but the company's quotes for the walls themselves are pretty expensive. Does anyone have any ideas on something cheap we could put together but that would still look really good? E.g. we…

Colour change leather sofa
I have a lovely 3 seat leather sofa in white. It looks out of place (ex's choice) and would like to dye it black. Have recoloured car seats, but not colour changed any. It's an £800 sofa and don't want to ruin it.... What are my chances of success? :)

How hard to dig foundations?
Looking at the cost of things for a two storey extension, one of the biggest costs is digging the foundations (Please correct me if I'm wrong). Now I don't mind doing a bit of digging, but how hard is it to dig the foundations out? And how do you know how deep to dig them? Does anyone have anything online somewhere that I…

loft conversion - added value?
Hi all, We have a new(ish) house that we love, but it a bit small for us and a growing family. Not being able to find anything we love more, we are again considering going up into the loft to make more space. There is still lots to do, I really need to get some better quotes and find out if there is a covenant/restrictions…

Hi, A year and a half ago we bought the Boston Kitchen from Magnet. We have had to replace ALL doors twice and now for a 3rd time, all due to the bubbling of the vaneer doors. Ceiling lights
Hi all, We've just bought our first house for £78,500, 4 bed semi Victorian town house. It needs work though - hence the price! The house is three storey and the top two floors don't have any ceiling lights or switches. How much should I put aside for these? There is lots of plug sockets though which obviously means there…

Which cordless combi drill?
My old one has finally died on me so I've decided to get something a bit better which will hopefully last a few years. Mostly for occasional DIY projects, it's unlikely to get any heavy use. Hoping that a Li-Ion battery will out last a Ni-Cad I've narrowed it down to…

Boarding out loft (insulation or insulated plasterboard)
Looking to undertake a loft conversion and not sure if to fully insulate with 200mm insulation and then just plasterboard or to insulate with 70mm insulation and then use 72.5mm insulated plasterboard. Both ways will meet the required u value so it comes down to cost and ease of installation. Advice please.

Fixing window locking wedges
Hello. I started a thread on MSE about renewing gasket/qlon and window hinges on some old upvc windows. I have got the stuff I need now and will do the hinges at the weekend. This week I replaced the old worn out qlon gasket on the side opening casement windows. The problem I have now is that as they are over 20 years old…
